Lahore: A major project costing approximately one billion rupees has been finalised to promote the use of alternative energy for street lighting and to conserve electricity in Lahore.
Under this project, solar streetlights will be installed in LDA City and Gulberg at a total cost exceeding Rs 934.7 million. Solar LED lights will be installed in LDA City’s Jinnah Sector (Package-V) at a cost of Rs 388.45 million, while another plan involves installing solar LED streetlights in Jinnah Sector (Package-VI) at a cost of Rs 396.61 million. Similarly, solar-powered streetlights will be installed in Gulberg under a sustainable development model at a cost of Rs 149.64 million.
According to the plan, a target of six months has been set to complete the installation of solar streetlights in LDA City, whereas the installation of solar-powered streetlights in Gulberg is planned to be completed within two months.
Sources indicate that the project aims to reduce reliance on conventional electricity for street lighting in LDA City and Gulberg, thereby helping to lower electricity costs. A decision has been made to expand the use of solar energy for streetlights in Lahore; the initiative aims to introduce a sustainable development model alongside achieving energy savings across the city.
A significant portion of the project’s total budget will be allocated to installing solar lights in Packages-V and VI of the Jinnah Sector in LDA City, while the installation of solar-powered lights in Gulberg has also been designated as a key component of the project.
According to officials, a timeline has been set for the completion of the solar streetlight project, and consideration is also being given to further expanding the use of solar energy for streetlights in Lahore in the future.
