Mirpur (ajk): World Post Day was observed across Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Friday with special ceremonies highlighting the enduring relevance of postal services in connecting communities and facilitating communication despite the rapid expansion of digital technologies.
The ceremonies, hosted by Pakistan Post at major stations across the liberated territory, including Mirpur, aimed to raise public awareness about the role of postal services in connecting people across the country and around the world.
In Mirpur, students and teachers from various educational institutions visited the General Post Office (GPO), where senior postal officials, led by Deputy Chief Postmaster Maqsood Hussain and Assistant Chief Postmaster Ch. Shabbir Hussain, briefed them on the history, evolution and modern-day functions of postal services.
On the occasion, the Deputy Chief Postmaster unveiled a special message from the Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), highlighting the significance of postal services in the present era and their future prospects.
GPO officials also cut a cake to mark the occasion and answered students’ questions about the development and functioning of postal services.
The speakers highlighted various services offered by Pakistan Post, including savings bank facilities, Western Union money transfers, money orders, electronic money orders and other services available to people across the country, including AJK. The visiting students were also taken to different sections of the GPO and briefed on their operations and efforts to meet the demands of the modern age.
World Post Day is observed annually on October 9 to mark the establishment of the General Postal Union in 1874, which was renamed the Universal Postal Union in 1878. The UPU became a specialised agency of the United Nations in 1948, while October 9 was designated World Post Day by its 16th Congress in Tokyo in 1969, recognising the importance of international postal cooperation and the free flow of mail worldwide.
