Kohat: The police arrested five suspects and seized illegal weapons during a crackdown in the district, the police said on Tuesday.

The operation was carried out by MRS Police Station on the instructions of District Police Officer (DPO) Shahbaz Elahi as part of an ongoing campaign against criminal elements and illegal arms holders.

Station House Officer, Abdul Rauf Bangash said police intercepted several suspicious individuals during patrols along Shekhan Road.

A search led to the recovery of one kalashnikov rifle with magazines and 60 rounds of ammunition, one .223-bore rifle with a magazine and 20 rounds, and three 30-bore pistols with magazines and 16 rounds of ammunition.

All five suspects were arrested at the scene, and criminal cases were registered against them, the police said.

Separately, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rana Tahir Mehmood inspected several police facilities across the district to review development work, security arrangements, cleanliness, discipline and public services.

The ASP visited the Police Facilitation Center, where he directed contractors to complete renovation work on schedule and maintain quality standards to improve services for the public. He also inspected Cantt Police Station, instructing officials to ensure proper record-keeping, maintain cleanliness and discipline, and safeguard government property.

During a visit to a traffic check post, Mehmood emphasized strengthening security, improving discipline and ensuring courteous treatment of the public while prioritizing traffic management and citizen convenience.

The inspection concluded at the Police Club, where ongoing renovation work and security measures were reviewed.

The police said the inspections were part of the DPO’s initiative to improve policing standards, public facilities and community confidence in law enforcement.

Sargodha: The University of Sargodha and Bayer Pakistan (Private) Limited on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research and technological innovation aimed at improving agricultural productivity and promoting food security.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will jointly evaluate, develop and implement solutions in areas, including crop protection, modern biotechnology, advanced agricultural technologies and sustainable farming practices.

According to details, the agreement is Bayer Pakistan’s first formal collaboration with a higher education institution in the country.

A joint consultative committee has been constituted to oversee the implementation of the partnership.

Dr Muhammad Kamran, assistant professor at the University of Sargodha, and Ms Iffat Naseem, market development researcher at Bayer Pakistan, will serve as the focal persons for their respective organisations.

The MoU was signed by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Qaisar Abbas and Bayer Pakistan Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Sarwar Awam, university’s deans and directors as well as Bayer Pakistan’s country head and members of its local leadership team.

Prof Dr Muhammad Ather Nadeem, chairman of the Department of Agronomy, and Amir Iqbal, market development lead at Bayer Pakistan, witnessed the signing.

Khanewal: A young man died under mysterious circumstances after being shifted between hospitals here on Tuesday.

Rescue 1122 said that Baqir Ali alias Sanwal, 20, an employee of the Carriage Department of Pakistan Railways, returned home late at night and his health condition deteriorated.

Upon receiving information, the rescue team shifted him to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, where doctors referred him to Nishtar Hospital. He died during treatment there.

Police shifted the body back to DHQ hospital, but the family refused to allow autopsy.

The family appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to order an impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Baqir Ali’s death.
