Jinnah House attack: ATC extends interim bail of PTI leader

Lahore: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday extended the interim bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Nadeem Abbas Bara until February 8 in the Jinnah House attack case.

The court also disposed of the pre-arrest bail petition of accused Abdul Haseeb as withdrawn.

ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gill heard the pre-arrest interim bail applications of the PTI leader and others, who appeared before the court following the expiry of their interim bail. During the proceedings, the investigation officer informed the court that Abdul Haseeb's arrest was not required in the case.

In response, the counsel for Abdul Haseeb requested permission to withdraw his client's bail application, which the court accepted. Subsequently, the court disposed of Abdul Haseeb's bail application as withdrawn and extended the interim bail of Nadeem Abbas Bara, Tayyab Majeed, Ameer Gull, Rana Talal, Farhanur Rehman, and others.

Meanwhile, the court also extended the interim bail of Muhammad Ashraf in four cases, including the Jinnah House attack case, until February 11, directing him to join the investigation.

The Sarwar Road police had registered a case against PTI leaders and workers on charges of attacking Jinnah House, also known as the residence of the Corps Commander Lahore, during the May 9 riots.

SC appoints Hamid and Malik to assist the Court on benches jurisdictions

Islamabad: The Supreme Court has appointed senior advocates Hamid Khan and Munir A Malik as amicus curiae to assist the Court on questions relating to the jurisdictions of regular benches and withdrawal of cases through the Practice and Procedure Committee despite a judicial order to fix a case before a particular bench.

A complex situation arose during hearing of certain cases regarding tax matters and the jurisdiction of regular benches of the Supreme Court. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah was conducting the proceedings on Thursday January 16. Justice Aqeel Abbasi was included in the bench as replacement for Justice Irfan Saadat for hearing the matter. The Court observed that Justice Aqeel Abbasi was part of the high court bench that heard the same matter so the plea should be placed before the same bench and be fixed for Monday January 20. The Court was disappointed to note that the case was not fixed according to the judicial order and was sent to the Constitutional Bench for hearing on January 27.

The Court summoned the Registrar SCP to explain the situation but he was not available due to health issue. Additional Registrar SCP appeared before the Court and informed that the case was sent to the Constitutional Bench by the Practice and Procedure Committee.

The Court expressed displeasure over the development and issued contempt of court notice to the Registrar for not complying with the Court clear directives.

In today's (Tuesday) hearing, the Additional Registrar informed the Court that the Procedure Committee has sent the case to the Constitutional Bench. After the 21 Amendment, the Committee decides what case should be fixed before the Constitutional Bench and what before the regular bench?

Justice Mansoor, however, said that the Committee cannot supersede a judicial order. When a case comes before a bench, even mistakenly, the rest is up to the bench and an administrative committee cannot withdraw it.

The Additional Registrar argued before the Court that the Committee fixes cases before benches and can withdraw them too.

Justice Mansoor remarked that it will be decided by the Court that either the Committee can withdraw a case or not? We desired to hear from the Registrar Judicial and you are the administrative one (apparently not relevant).

Barrister Salahuddin opined that the Committee or the Research Cell of the SCP can only put a note for fixing a case before a certain bench, but the final decision is made by the Court. It is a routine matter in Sindh High Court where regular and constitutional benches send case to each other almost on daily basis.

The Court adjourned the proceedings for tomorrow and appointed senior advocates SCP Hamid Khan and Munir A Malik to assist the Court on questions regarding the Jurisdictions of the regular benches. The Court also summoned the Attorney General for Pakistan to appear before the Court.

Shikarpur police arrested three dacoits, one killed in targeted operation

Larkana: In a targeted operation against robbers in Rustam and Kot Shaho police stations of Shikarpur district, one robber was killed and three robbers were arrested with injuries on Tuesday.

The Shikarpur police conducted a targeted operation against the dacoits in Rustam and Kot Shaho, in which the dacoit Nadir Mirani was killed while the main operatives of the Jatoi gang, Abdul Haq Badani, during the targeted operation against Ali Murad Badani, Yasin Badani, Murtu Kamalani, Shahzadu Kamalani, there was an exchange of fire in which 3 bandits have been arrested in injured condition, including Sikandar Badani Jatoi, Shabir Badani Jatoi, and Rand Badani Jatoi.

On this occasion Deputy Inspector General of Police Larkana Nasir Aftab told they the dead bandit's body has been taken into police custody and shifted to the hospital. DIG Larkana further said that during the operation, Badani, 15 hideouts of Kamalani and Saad Khanani Jatoi gang and other robbers have been set on fire and destroyed.

He said that the arrested robbers are involved in police encounters, murder, attempted murder, robberies, looting and other serious incidents.

Mirani was wanted and involved in more than 18 serious cases of murder, attempted murder, robberies, robbery and other serious cases. The deceased robber Kamalani, Saad Khanani Jatoi was involved in kidnappings and robberies along with the gang.

SALU Khairpur Inaugurates two state-of-art science laboratories

Sukkur: Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) Khairpur's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Khushk, on Tuesday inaugurated two cutting-edge science laboratories at the university.

The laboratories, established at a cost of Rs. 8 million funded by the Sindh Higher Education Commission, include the Interdisciplinary and Drug Discovery Lab at the Biochemistry Department and the DNA Fingerprinting Facilities Lab at the Dates Palm Research Institute.

Dr. Khushk emphasized the significance of these labs in advancing research, particularly in alternative and complementary medicine, and praised the efforts of the Principal Investigators and Co-Principal Investigators.

The Vice Chancellor also outlined plans to improve the university's infrastructure, including faculty housing, hostels, and a solar power system.

The new laboratories will focus on exploring the nutritional and therapeutic potential of indigenous plants and fostering international research collaborations.

Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Wahid Bux Jatoi emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, encouraging researchers to contribute to the project's success.

The ceremony was attended by various deans, chairmen, and faculty members, reflecting the university's commitment to a collaborative academic and research environment.

Anti-encroachment drive gears up

Lahore: The provincial capital is undergoing an extensive and focused anti-encroachment drive, headed by Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza.

The drive aims not only to clear streets and footpaths but also to secure the city's future and uphold the rights of its citizens. Administrative officers are actively conducting field operations against encroachment mafias.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) Ravi Tariq Shabbir led an operation at Begum Kot Chowk, removing two large counters placed on the footpath. Prior to this, warnings had been issued to violators.

Similarly, AC Shalimar Dr. Anam Fatima carried out operation on GT Road, sealing 12 shops and seized two truck-loads of confiscated goods. AC Model Town Sahibzada Muhammad Yousuf inspected Link Road and Maulana Shaukat Ali Road, removing encroachments from three shops. One shop, repeatedly violating rules, was sealed, and its goods were confiscated.

AC Shalimar Dr. Anam Fatima also took action against encroachments on McLeod Road and Empress Road, recording 12 violations. Encroachments were cleared from Haji Camp, with seized goods removed to restore public pathways.

In Model Town, AC Muhammad Yousuf convened a detailed meeting with the Zonal Regulation Officer to develop a long-term strategy against encroachments, focusing on permanent solutions to prevent reoccurrence.

DC Syed Musa Raza reaffirmed his commitment to making Lahore encroachment-free, stressing that no one would be allowed to violate the law. He emphasized the use of all available resources to achieve this goal and promised strict monitoring to prevent future violations.

PM expresses sorrow over loss of lives in fire incident in Turkiye

Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of precious lives in a deadly fire incident in a hotel in Turkiye.

"Deeply saddened to learn of the fire in a hotel in Kartalkaya ski resort in Northern Turkiye," the prime minister said in a post on social media platform X.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish nation, especially, the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this accident.

He also prayed for the swift recovery of those injured in the incident.
