CM pays tribute to martyrs of Kashmir

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has paid glowing tribute to the Kashmiri martyrs and reiterated Pakistan's unwavering support for the Kashmiri people's struggle for freedom. In her message on Right to Self-Determination Day for the People of Kashmir, the CM emphasized that January 5 was a day to honor the sacrifices of Kashmiri people and salute their courageous struggle for self-determination. She recalled that on this day in 1949, the United Nations recognized the right of Kashmiri people to determine their own future. The CM acknowledged the immense suffering of the Kashmiri people, who had endured decades of Indian oppression and brutality. 'Our Kashmiri brothers and sisters have been facing unimaginable hardships, but their resolve remains unshaken,' she said.

The chief minister reaffirmed that Pakistan would continue to support the Kashmir cause at all international fora. "The government of Pakistan is raising the Kashmir issue globally and will continue to do so until the Kashmiri people are granted their legitimate right to self-determination," she stated. CM Maryam Nawaz urged the international community to play a proactive role in ensuring the Kashmiri people receive their rightful freedom. "Struggle of the Kashmiri people is our own struggle,' she asserted. The CM expressed confidence that the day would soon come when the people of Kashmir would be liberated and the sun of freedom would shine brightly over the region.

Lasting regional peace hinges on Kashmir plebiscite, says Rana Qasim Noon


Islamabad: Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir, Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon on Sunday stated that resolving the Kashmir issue through a plebiscite in line with UN Security Council resolutions is crucial for achieving peace in the region.



In his message on Kashmir Right to Self-Determination Day, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir, Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon emphasized that on January 5, 1949, the United Nations Security Council recognized the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, by adopting a resolution endorsing their right to decide their future through a referendum.



He stated that the Kashmiri people on both sides of the Line of Control are currently celebrating their fundamental right to self-determination.



He stated that the Kashmiri people have been striving for their right to self-determination for over seven decades, with innocent children, women, and elders making immense sacrifices in this pursuit.



The Kashmiri people will persist in their struggle until they secure their right to self-determination.



He urged the United Nations to ensure the implementation of resolutions concerning the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, emphasizing that the oppression and repression by the Indian government cannot suppress their movement for this right.



He said Kashmir is the jugular vein of Pakistan, and the Pakistani people share a deep bond with the Kashmiri people. Pakistan will steadfastly continue to support the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination and their struggle for freedom.



He urged the United Nations to acknowledge the legitimate demand of the Kashmiri people for self-determination in line with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.



Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon stated that a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue is crucial, in line with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He emphasized that Pakistan will persist in providing steadfast moral, diplomatic, and political support to the Kashmiri people on all regional and international platforms.

DC inspects cleanliness operation

Lodhran: Deputy Commissioner Dr. Lubna Nazir inspected the ongoing zero-waste cleanliness operation, initiated under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's Suthra Punjab vision.

The operation, being conducted through a public-private partnership, aimed to collect and dispose of 9,636 tons of waste from the district. Addressing the media during her visit, Dr. Lubna Nazir stated that 3,500 tons of waste have already been collected so far. The inspection included a detailed review of waste collection and disposal mechanism as well as a visit to the dumping site near the railway station, where she assessed the weighing and dumping processes.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Revenue Syed Waseem Hassan, Manager Multan Waste Management Company Lodhran Operations Habibullah, and other senior officials were present.

The DC also visited the office of the private contractor company involved in the operation, where she distributed uniforms to sanitation workers. She emphasized that incorporating modern machinery and private-sector expertise has significantly enhanced the efficiency and organization of the cleanliness initiative.

Dr. Nazir directed Manager Lodhran Operations for Multan Waste Management Company, to ensure 100 percent implementation of the waste management plan. She announced that daily door-to-door cleanliness operation would be conducted in urban areas, while rural areas would follow a schedule with alternate-day cleanups.

To ensure the success of this massive operation, a workforce of 550 personnel and 127 machines has been deployed. Dr. Nazir further revealed plans to procure additional machinery and recruit more personnel to make the operation even more effective.

Partly cloudy weather to dominate city


Lahore: The partly cloudy and cold weather continued to dominate the city on Saturday, with



the MET Office forecasting similar conditions for the next 24 hours.



According to the MET officials, a frontal weather system remains active over the upper parts of



the country and is expected to persist until the morning of January 6. Rain, accompanied by snowfall



over the hills, is anticipated in northern Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Punjab, Pothohar



region, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, and Galiyat.



Moderate to dense fog is likely to persist during the night and early morning hours in most



plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh.



Rainfall was recorded in several cities, including Chitral, Mirkhani, Parachinar, Drosh, Peshawar, Kalat, Zhob, Loralai, and Quetta, while snowfall was reported in Ziarat, Parachinar, Chitral, and Kalat.



The lowest temperature was recorded in Gupis, where the mercury dropped to -6°C.



In Lahore, the minimum temperature was 5.8°C while the maximum reached 17.5°C.

City’s AQI increases

Lahore: Air pollution level on Saturday had been increased in the provincial capital

once again. The average air quality index (AQI) of the 'City of Gardens' reached 398, making Lahore the second most polluted city in the world. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the highest AQI was recorded in Cantt area at 796, followed by 621 around Mall Road and 528 in Johar Town. In addition, the AQI was recorded around 493 at Shimla Pahari, while 492 on Defence Road.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, the CM Punjab's flagship initiative Green Credit Programme (PGCP)

has been launched to curtail smog and air pollution in Lahore.

The PGCP is a part of the Punjab Growth Strategy and aims at achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program is being implemented first in the city of Lahore to combat pollution, and will, later on, expand across the entire province.

The programme seeks to mobilise youth, students, women and the broader community to engage in environmentally positive actions. Individuals and communities carrying out environmentally positive actions, broadly have been divided into six areas of interventions including Air, Water, Waste, Land, Biodiversity and Ecology and Awareness.
