Political stability and export-led growth key to economic prosperity: Qaiser Sheikh


Islamabad:: Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh emphasized the importance of political stability and export-led growth for Pakistan’s economic development.



Talking to Pakistan Television, he highlighted the government’s efforts to set a clear path for sustainable progress.



He shared that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently launched the Uraan Pakistan program, a five-year plan aimed at achieving 6 percent growth and boosting exports to $60 billion.



Sheikh noted that the government achieves success in curbing inflation, which has dropped from a staggering 38 percent to single digits.



‘The other economic indicators are also improving, and we’re managing to repair the damage to the economy,’ he added.



The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing effective policies to stabilize the economy and drive growth.

ANF recovers over 287 kg drugs in five operations

Rawalpindi: Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) while conducting five operations across the country arrested three accused including a woman and recovered over 287 kg drugs worth Rs 209 million, said an ANF Headquarters spokesman here on Thursday.

He informed that 231 kg morphine was recovered from an uninhabited area of Hazarganji, Quetta.

In second operation, 35 kg opium, 12 kg ice and 6 kg heroin were recovered from Goth Lakha Othal area of Lasbela.

3 kg ice concealed in secret cavities of a vehicle was recovered near M-1 Motorway, Islamabad.

740 grams ice was recovered from the possession of two accused including a woman arrested in two operations near Iqbal Shaheed Toll Plaza Attock.

Separate cases have been registered against the arrested accused under the Narcotics Control Act and further investigations are under process.

PTI founder’s lawyers given final opportunity for cross examination

Islamabad:: An Accountability Court (AC) on Thursday granted final opportunity to PTI founder's legal team for cross examination against prosecution witness in toshakhana-II case.

Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjamand heard the toshakhana-II case at Central Jail Adiala wherein PTI founder and his wife Bushra Bibi appeared before the court.

During hearing, the defense lawyer filed one time exemption from appearance request for Bushra Bibi's counsel Arshad Tabraiz and said that he couldn't come to the court due to sickness. He prayed the court to postpone today's hearing.

However, the prosecutor Zulifkar Naqvi apposed the request. The court accepted the request of defense lawyer and granted final opportunity to them for cross examination against the witness on January 6.

PTA conducts QoS survey to assess performance, quality of CMOs

Islamabad:: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) conducted an independent Quality of Service (QoS) survey in 18 cities across Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the third quarter of 2024 to assess the performance and quality of Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) across the country.

According to a news release the survey covered approximately 2,400 km per CMO over 63 days, focusing on main roads, service roads, and residential sectors.

Using state-of-the-art automated QoS monitoring tools, over 290,000 tests for mobile broadband performance and 41,700 voice and SMS samples were conducted. These tests evaluated key performance indicators (KPIs) as per Next Generation Mobile Service (NGMS) licenses and QoS Regulations 2021.

Results ranked CMOs on mobile network coverage, voice services, and broadband speed, with advanced technologies like LTE Carrier Aggregation and Voice over LTE performing best. While compliance was largely satisfactory, some voice KPIs fell below standards in specific areas. PTA has directed operators to take corrective actions.

Rawalpindi Police arrest 21 law breakers

Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Police on Thursday arrested 21 lawbreakers involved in different criminal activities from across the district.

A police spokesman, in a statement, said a total of seven accused were nabbed in a crackdown against drug peddlers with more than 8.5 kilograms of hashish.

The Taxila Police recovered 2.2 kg hashish from accused Babar and 1.65 kg hashish from Shahzad while the Gujar Khan Police held Imran with 1.46 kg hashish and the Civil Lines Police nabbed Uzair with 1.4 kg hashish.

Similarly, the Race Course Police recovered 1.15 kg hashish from accused Inzamam, while the Kallar Syedan and RA Bazaar Police arrested accused Usama and Ijaz on the recovery of 550 grams and 520 grams hashish respectively.

Likewise, 10 accused were arrested with 38 litres and four bottles of liquor throughout the district. The Sadiqabad Police recovered 10 litres of liquor from accused Danish, while the Ratta Amral Police nabbed Rashid with 8 litres of liquor. The Bani Police recovered 5 litres of liquor from accused Qamar and 5 litres of liquor from Shahzad, while the Waris Khan Police arrested Wasif with 5 liters of liquor and the Race Course Police arrested Bilal with 5 liters of liquor.

The Airport Police recovered 4 bottles of liquor from accused Noman, Suleman, Tashfeen and Waqas.

Meanwhile, four accused Umar, Matar Syed, Kafeel and Jawad were arrested during search operations for violation of the Tenancy Act.

ATC grants interim bail to PTI leader in terrorism case

Islamabad:: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Thursday granted pre-arrest bail to PTI leader Taimoor Jhagra in a case registered by Secretariat Police Station.

The court stopped the police from arresting the petitioner till January 22, and also sought case record from it.

ATC Judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain heard the interim bail petition of PTI leader in a terrorism case. The court after hearing arguments granted pre-arrest bail to the petitioner against surety bonds worth Rs5,000.

It may be mentioned here that the secretariat police station of the capital had registered FIR against Taimoor Jhagra under anti-terrorism law.
