MUZAFFARABAD:The Chief Election Commissioner of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Justice (Retd) Abdul Rasheed Sulharia on Monday held a high-level meeting to discuss the possibilities for ensuring security for peaceful conduction of local government elections in AJK.
The meeting was appraised the law and order situation in view of the forthcoming LG elections to be held on November 27 in AJK.
Senior Member Election Commission Raja Farooq Niaz, Member Election Commission Farhat Ali Mir, AJK Chief Secretary Dr. Muhammad Usman Chachar, IGP AJK Police Dr. Ameer Ahmed Shaikh, Secretary Election Commission Muhammad Ghazanfar Khan, Deputy Inspector General Police Raja Sharyar Ahmed, DIG Police Region Muzaffarabsad Irfan Masood Kashfi and the Election Commissioner for Local Body Raja Rashid Mehmood attended the meeting.
The CEC AJK briefed the meeting about the context of a move made by the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir that federal and provincial governments would ensure the provision of the security forces for the maintenance of law and order situation during forthcoming LG elections.
The CEC AJK observed that law and order would be maintained during the LB Elections in AJK and a letter would be written to the concerned quarters and institutions for the provision of security forces.
He made it clear that LG elections would be conducted at any cost and there was no chance of cancellation of elections.
Sulharia directed the Chief Secretary and IGP to make an alternate plan for the arrangement of security in case of non-availability of security forces from the federal government. However, he said, negotiations with the federal government were in process for the provision of forces.
