Karachi: The city administration’s campaign against encroachments, illegal roadside hotels and action against professional beggars is continuing across the city.
Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi visited various areas of the city on Thursday to review anti-encroachment operations development works and cleaning of storm water drains . He inspected the demolition of encroachments along the railway track in Gulistan-e-Johar.
During visits to Songal Nullah on Abul Hassan Isphahani Road and Chakora Nullah on Habib University Road, the Commissioner took notice of inadequate cleaning of the nullahs.
He directed Assistant Commissioner Gulshan-e-Iqbal Faraz Abbasi to formally inform the Residents’ Associations of the apartment buildings located on both sides of Chakora Nullah that residents dumping waste into the nullah were creating difficulties in its cleaning.
He directed that residents should be advised to refrain from throwing garbage into the nullah. If residents involved in dumping waste are identified, they should be called to the office through notices and warned against repeating the practice.
During his visit to Songal Nullah, the Commissioner was informed about illegal extensions constructed by some adjoining houses inside the nullah.
It was decided that the Deputy Commissioner would take immediate action to demolish the illegal structures and ensure that the nullah is properly cleaned and that further illegal construction is prevented.
During his inspection of the railway track in Gulistan-e-Johar, Deputy Commissioner East Nasrullah Abbasi informed the Commissioner that most of the temporary and semi-permanent structures had already been demolished. The remaining illegal structures would be completely removed within two days, he said.
The Commissioner also made a detailed visit to different areas of Gulistan-e-Johar and inspected the rehabilitation and construction work on the road from Habib University to Dubai House, as well as the installation of a water supply line.
He directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to complete the road construction and rehabilitation work within a maximum period of two months.
The Commissioner also took notice of pushcarts, stalls and other encroachments beneath Johar Chowrangi Flyover, as well as encroachments on footpaths, the central reservation and roadside areas along Professor Abdul Ghafoor Road.
He directed the Deputy Commissioner to take priority measures to prevent encroachments and ensure smooth traffic flow on the busy thoroughfare.
He noted that the area is an important and busy commercial centre, resulting in considerable pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Pushcarts, roadside stalls and haphazard parking were causing inconvenience to citizens, he added.
Meanwhile, as part of the campaign against professional beggars, nine beggars have been arrested in Bugdadi area district south and cases have been registered against them as per report submitted DC south Javed Nabi khoso.
