RAWALPINDI: Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Taimoor Khan urged the citizens on Sunday to use helmets while riding motorbikes to avoid fatal accidents and heavy fines to be imposed under the revised regulatory regime.
In a statement here, the CTO said the penalty for motorcycle riders without helmets will automatically be Rs 2000, adding that the Punjab Information Technology Board has also upgraded the Digital Warden Challan App.
Earlier, the fine for motorcyclists without helmets was only Rs 200.
Many people, he said started wearing helmets because of the helmet campaign last month, the CTO pointed out that at present most of the bikers abstain from wearing helmets habitually.
“Wear a helmet not to avoid challan but to protect your head from life-threatening injury,” he added.
In 73 % of fatal accidents, precious lives were lost due to head injury, whereas hanging the helmet and keeping it on the tank will also be challaned, he informed.
The action is aimed at making the journey of motorcyclists safer, he said, adding, “A helmet will only protect your head if you use it properly.”
“Violation of one-way traffic, without a driving license would also be fined Rs 2000.
There is also a fine of Rs 2000 against wrong parking and smoke-emitting vehicles,” he concluded.
