Faisalabad: A fresh effort to revive Gangapur’s remarkable horse-drawn railway train – an unusual piece of Punjab’s transport and cultural history – has gained momentum as Divisional Commissioner Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh ordered practical measures for restoration of the historic service and protection of the heritage sites associated with Sir Ganga Ram.
The divisional commissioner visited the historic village of Gangapur along with Jaranwala Assistant Commissioner Ziaullah Gondal and MPA Sardar Khan Bahadur Dogar and inspected the historic horse-drawn train, the ancestral Haveli of renowned engineer and philanthropist Sir Ganga Ram and other heritage sites.
During visit, the divisional commissioner directed the relevant officials to initiate practical steps for restoration of the historic horse-drawn railway and take necessary measures to preserve the area’s heritage.
He said that the horse-drawn train was an important symbol of the culture and historical heritage of the area and stressed the need for protecting it for future generations.
Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh also directed the authorities to ensure protection and preservation of Sir Ganga Ram’s historic Haveli and other significant heritage structures in Gangapur.
He further made it clear that encroachments on the railway track would not be allowed and directed the relevant authorities to take action against illegal encroachments in accordance with the law.
The divisional commissioner’s visit focused on assessing the present condition of the historic sites and exploring practical measures for their preservation and rehabilitation.
Speaking on the occasion, MPA Sardar Khan Bahadur Dogar welcomed the proposed restoration of Ganga Pur’s unique horse-drawn train, describing it as an important part of the area’s historical and cultural identity.
He said that nations that valued their history and heritage always took practical measures to preserve their cultural legacy, adding that restoration of the historic train would help protect an important part of Gangapur’s heritage.
The officials also reviewed other historical locations in the village and discussed measures for their protection, preservation and possible restoration.
