IHC fixes Sept 29 for hearing petition seeking appointment of Indus Water Commissioner

Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has fixed September 29, for hearing a petition seeking appointment of a permanent Indus Water Commissioner.

According to the cause list issued by the IHC Registrar’s Office, the case has been scheduled after the judicial vacations. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir will hear the petition filed by the Judicial Activism Panel.

The court had earlier sought a response from the federal government regarding the non-appointment of the Indus Water Commissioner and directed the Deputy Attorney General to obtain instructions from the government and apprise the court accordingly.

The petitioner contended that the post of Indus Water Commissioner had remained vacant since September 1, 2025.

It was further submitted that under Article 8 of the Indus Waters Treaty, the Indus Water Commissioner was required to be a permanent appointment.

The petitioner said the matter had assumed serious significance as India was constructing dams on the Chenab basin.

The case has now been fixed for hearing on September 29.
