IST launches Pakistan’s first Master’s program in Space Technology and Applications

Islamabad: The Institute of Space Technology (IST) has launched Pakistan’s first Master of Science programme in Space Technology and Applications (MS STA), aimed at developing specialized expertise in emerging space technologies and their applications.

The programme is being offered by the Department of Space Science in collaboration with the National Center of GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA), according to the programme information shared by IST.

The MS STA offers five specialization domains, including Geospatial Science and Earth Observation, Positioning, Navigation and Timing, Satellite Communications, Satellite Systems Engineering, and Space Launch Systems.

The programme has been designed as an interdisciplinary graduate programme integrating Artificial Intelligence and data analytics with space technology, while providing access to specialized laboratories and advanced research facilities.

According to IST, the programme offers research opportunities aligned with Pakistan’s National Space Policy and provides career pathways in space agencies, research institutions, defence, telecommunications, geospatial industries and emerging space enterprises.

The programme is also aligned with Uraan Pakistan’s 5Es and Vision 2047 and contributes to relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The launch comes amid growing demand for skilled human resources in areas including Earth observation, satellite communications, navigation and positioning, satellite systems and space launch technologies.

IST has invited prospective students to apply for the programme through its online admission system. The university’s official website currently shows admissions open for BS, MS and PhD programmes for Fall 2026.
