HYDERABAD:The Director Admin Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) Abdul Sattar Jatoi said a special ward has been established in the hospital for the treatment of children having Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida ailment.
He said this while addressing a seminar organized at LUH in connection with the “World Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Day”. Jatoi advised pregnant women that they must use folic acid tablets and complete its course during pregnancy so that the child can be protected from this kind of disease.
LUH has made it possible to treat every brain disease in children and adults with modern machines including MRI, CT scan and pathology tests, Jatoi said. He said LUH was the second largest hospital in Sindh, where all the patients from remote areas of Sindh come for their treatment. Addressing the seminar, Prof. Surgeon Dr Riaz Ahmed Raja, head of the Department of Neurosurgery Lums, said that major diseases can be avoided by taking preventive measures, using medicines and having check-ups.
He said that if women take precautionary measures during pregnancy and keep getting their check-up done, diseases such as congenitally large head and spinal cord or water accumulation in the head can be avoided. He said that due to congenitally large head and waist defects, weakness in the legs of children is also evident. Prof. Roshan Ara Qazi, Prof. Raheel Sikander, Dr. Javed Altaf and others also addressed the seminar, while a large number of civil society representatives including doctors, nurses and paramedical staff also participated in the seminar.
