Islamabad: Chairperson National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), Rabiya Javeri Agha, here on Thursday said that social media could play an important role in breaking the silence around Gender-Based Violence and bringing such incidents into the public domain.
Talking to a private news channel, the NCHR Chairperson said that highlighting such incidents could help raise awareness and encourage people to speak about issues that were often considered too sensitive to discuss.
She, however, cautioned that the repeated circulation of such incidents on social media could have harmful effects on audiences, particularly when perpetrators appeared to face no legal consequences.
She said such portrayals could inadvertently send a message that women would face violence if they violated prevailing social or family norms, while those responsible might escape accountability.
She stressed that social media had an important role in breaking the silence around gender-based violence, but responsible reporting and effective legal action against perpetrators were essential to prevent such violence from being normalized.
