LAHORE:Punjab Resilient and Inclusive Agriculture Transformation (PRIAT)” project is aimed at reducing the adverse effects of climate change and install modern irrigation systems and promote profitable agriculture. Agriculture department sources said on Sunday that this is five-year project which would be implemented by Water Management wing and with a cost of Rs 68 billion to provide modern irrigation system facilities to the farmers.
The World Bank was providing support of more than Rs 45 billion. Under this project more than 1.3 million rural farm families would get direct benefit. Sources said this project would promote efficient use of water which would directly benefit the small farmers. The production of crops in Punjab province would improve by 25 percent while the water productivity by 20 percent. Under this project, 3,000 water courses would be improved and modern irrigation system would be installed on 40,000 acres while solar system would be installed on 20,000 acres. Under this project, 1 million acre feet of water would be saved annually across the province and provision of water to 600,000 acres would improve. As per the project document, the goals of agricultural development would be achieved in time, sources added.
