Faisalabad: Faisalabad’s aging water supply infrastructure was set for a major overhaul under a proposed Rs.14.2 billion project being developed with the cooperation of Germany’s KfW Development Bank.
According to spokesman of Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA),this project will include upgraded treatment facilities,new tube wells,large water storage tanks and modern monitoring systems for millions of residents of the city and adjoining areas.
He said that the project,being undertaken in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz, envisages comprehensive rehabilitation and upgradation of Faisalabad’s water supply infrastructure over a period of four years.
Under this project,the Gulfishan Water Treatment Plant would be rehabilitated and upgraded to improve the capacity and efficiency of the city’s water supply system,he added.
He said that 10 new tube wells would also be installed at different locations in Faisalabad to strengthen the existing water supply network and help meet the growing demand for potable water.
He said that the project also includes construction of large water storage tanks at Samanabad, Bismillah Chowk and Gulshan Colony,which would enhance water storage capacity and facilitate more efficient distribution to consumers.
A modern monitoring system would be installed to curb water theft and wastage,enabling relevant authorities to keep a closer watch on the water supply network and improve management of the available resource,he added.
He said that the proposed project would benefit millions of people in Faisalabad and surrounding areas by improving the availability and reliability of water supply and upgrading the infrastructure on a sustainable basis.
He said that around five percent of the total project cost would be earmarked for ‘green resilience’ initiatives, aimed at strengthening the system against environmental and climate-related challenges.
He said that the project reflected Punjab government’s objective of providing citizens with clean and safe water at their doorstep while modernizing the city’s water supply infrastructure.
He said that the project would be approved by Secretary Housing during Punjab Development Working Party (PDWP).
The initiative,once approved and implemented was expected to provide a comprehensive upgrade of Faisalabad’s water supply system instead of addressing individual infrastructure deficiencies in isolation,he added.
