SC acquits mother accused of killing five-year-old son for lack of evidence

Islamabad

Islamabad:The Supreme Court on Thursday acquitted Aneeka, who had been accused of murdering her five-year-old son, for lack of sufficient evidence.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Malik Shehzad Ahmad Khan heard the case.

During the hearing, the accused’s counsel, Prince Rehan, argued that his client had been accused of killing the child by burning him, but there was no solid evidence against her.

He said neither petrol nor any other material allegedly used in the incident had been recovered from the accused, while there was also no direct eyewitness to the alleged murder.

The state counsel contended that the accused’s own video statement was available and that she had also confessed to killing the child during a television programme.

Justice Shakeel Ahmad observed that a television programme alone could not constitute admissible evidence and that such a programme had to be corroborated by other evidence.

Justice Shakeel Ahmad further observed that the investigating officer had failed to discharge his responsibility properly, while Justice Malik Shehzad Ahmad noted contradictions between the testimonies of witnesses and the medical report.

A case had been registered against Aneeka at Sihala Police Station, Islamabad, accusing her of killing her five-year-old son.

The Supreme Court acquitted her after finding the evidence against her insufficient.
