Islamabad: Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry on Wednesday met with a high-level Google delegation led by Senior Director David Weller to discuss digital security, online content management, counter-terrorism efforts, and cooperation between the government and technology platforms.
Google Pakistan representative Dr. Kyle Gardner was also part of the delegation.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration to promote a safer digital environment in Pakistan. Discussions covered the role of social media in countering terrorism, mechanisms for the timely removal of harmful online content, and ways to improve coordination between public institutions and digital platforms.
Speaking during the meeting, Talal Chaudhry said Pakistan aims to expand its cooperation and communication with Google to support a secure digital space for users.
He noted that Pakistan faces circumstances that differ from many other countries and said digital platforms must take local conditions into account when addressing online challenges.
The minister said terrorist groups continue to use social media platforms to spread propaganda, recruit supporters, and create fear among the public.
He stressed that online platforms have become an important area in the fight against terrorism and that close cooperation between governments and technology companies is essential.
Talal Chaudhry also highlighted the importance of proactive monitoring of social media content. He said Pakistan’s security situation requires timely action against material that promotes violence, extremism, or unlawful activities. According to the minister, stronger coordination can help reduce the misuse of online platforms and support national efforts against terrorism.
Google Senior Director David Weller reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working with the Pakistani government on issues related to digital security and online safety. He said Google would continue its cooperation with relevant authorities to help create a safer digital environment for users in Pakistan.
The meeting was attended by members of the Social Media Protection and Regulation Authority, including M. Saad Ali and Salman Zafar. Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency Khurram Ali and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Interior Malik Sanaullah were also present.
