HYDERABAD:An awareness workshop on Thalassemia and its treatment was held at Liaquat University Hospital (Civil Hospital) Hyderabad on Wednesday.
A large number of doctors from various departments, especially pediatrics attended the workshop while senior hematologist Dr. Ghulam Nabi Kakepoto participated via video link.
Dr Kakepoto said the prevalence of Thalassemia is increasing in Pakistan and also shared up-to-date information about Thalassemia and its treatment.
Medical Superintendent (MS) LU hospital Dr. Mubashir Ali Kolachi said a ward equipped with modern facilities had been set up in the hospital for Thalassemia patient children belonging from Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Matiari, Nawabshah, Dadu
and other districts of Sindh.
As many as 850 Thalassemia patient children are registered in the ward and they are being treated with medicines while blood transfusion is being provided to them from the blood bank of the hospital, Dr Kolachi said and added that Thalassemia ward was established on special directives of the provincial Health Minister Dr Azra Pechoho.
He said it was very difficult for poor people to get treated for a contagious disease like Thalassemia and in view of this, free medicines and treatments along with ultrasound, a Doppler ultrasound and other pathology tests are also available in the this ward free of cost.
The Director Admin Abdul Sattar Jatoi praised the organizers and encouraged the audience to create more awareness about Thalassemia as this is one of the most important, but sadly ignored topics.
Chief Pathologist, Dr. Muhammad Haroon Memon gave a detailed lecture on Thalassemia.
