Peshawar: An accused wanted in the murder of Customs official Abbas Ahmad was killed during a police encounter within the jurisdiction of Pishtakhara Police Station in here on Sunday, while his accomplice managed to flee the scene.

Police said the dead suspect has been identified as Abdul Qayyum, son of Adnan, a resident of Umeed Abad.

According to police, the suspect and his associate opened fire after coming face-to-face with police. During the exchange, Abdul Qayyum was fatally struck, reportedly by gunfire from his own accomplice.

The slain suspect was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Customs officer Abbas Ahmad, son of Deedar Gul, near his residence in Shaheen Colony on July 2. Police recovered a pistol from the suspect’s possession.

Records show that Abdul Qayyum faced multiple criminal charges, including murder, narcotics offences, aerial firing and violations of the Arms Act. Police said raids are underway to apprehend the absconding suspect.

Mirpur: Kashmiris in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Indian-administered Kashmir and diaspora communities are set to observe Kashmir Martyrs’ Day on Monday, July 13, with commemorative events honoring those who were killed during the 1931 uprising against the Dogra rulers.

The observance marks the anniversary of the deaths of 22 Kashmiris who were shot outside Srinagar’s Central Jail on July 13, 1931, during protests over the trial of Abdul Qadeer, a figure associated with anti-Dogra activism. The incident is widely regarded by many Kashmiris as a defining moment in the region’s political history.

Authorities and organizers in Pakistan-administered Kashmir said special prayers, seminars, rallies and tribute ceremonies would be held at district and tehsil headquarters, including Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Bagh, Rawalakot, Bhimber, Haveli, Neelum Valley and Hattian Bala.

The government of Pakistan-administered Kashmir has declared a public holiday to facilitate public participation in the commemorative events.

Organizers said participants would renew calls for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute in line with the aspirations of the people of the region and international commitments. They also said prayer gatherings and visits to martyrs’ graveyards were planned in several areas.

In Indian-administered Kashmir, organizers and pro-Pakistan groups have called for observances marking the anniversary. The extent of participation and any restrictions imposed by authorities could not be independently verified.

Faisalabad: Two people including a woman lost their lives while seven others sustained injuries in three separate road traffic accidents in Faisalabad during the past 12 hours.

Rescue 1122 spokesman said that a fatal accident occurred near 465 Bypass on the Samundri-Faisalabad Road where a speeding truck struck a motorcycle. As a result, 25-year-old Shahida Bibi, wife of Hassan, died on-the-spot while rescue personnel shifted her body to THQ Hospital Samundri after completing necessary legal formalities.

In another tragic incident near Chak No. 470-GB Totianwala in Samundri tehsil, a collision between two motorcycles claimed the life of 35-year-old Abu Bakar son of Ilyas at the spot while four others suffered injuries.

Rescue 1122 shifted two injured to Tehsil Headquarter (THQ) Hospital Samundri in critical condition. They included 35-year-old Umrana wife of Imran and her seven-year-old son Aliyan Imran.

Two other victims including four-year-old Iman daughter of Imran and 15-year-old Ayesha daughter of Shafqat were provided first aid at the spot.

Meanwhile, another serious road accident took place near Chak No.240 on Khannuana-Makkoana Bypass Road where a Hyundai pickup collided with a Mazda vehicle, leaving three persons critically injured.

The injured identified as 23-year-old Fakhar son of Akhtar, 17-year-old Amir son of Azhar and 26-year-old Qamar son of Ramzan, all residents of Bhakkar, were provided first aid by Rescue 1122 before shifted them to Allied Hospital-I (DHQ Hospital) Faisalabad for further treatment.

Emergency teams responded promptly to all three incidents, ensuring immediate medical assistance, evacuation of the injured to hospitals and transportation of the deceased to the respective healthcare facilities, Rescue 1122 spokesman added.
