PMYP, OPGF join hands to empower youth, overseas Pakistanis


Islamabad: The Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP) and the Overseas Pakistanis Global Foundation (OPGF) have agreed to strengthen cooperation to empower Pakistan’s youth and deepen engagement with overseas Pakistanis through joint initiatives in entrepreneurship, skills development, digital innovation, and diaspora engagement.



According to a press release received here Thursday from the Overseas Pakistanis Global Foundation in New York, the understanding was reached during a meeting in New York between PMYP Chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan and OPGF Chairman Zaheer Akhtar Mehr, where both sides discussed expanding collaboration to promote national development and create new opportunities for young Pakistanis at home and abroad.



Welcoming the OPGF delegation, Mashhood described overseas Pakistanis as one of the country’s greatest national assets, making remarkable contributions through remittances, investment, knowledge transfer, and professional expertise.



The OPGF delegation was led by Chairman Zaheer Akhtar Mehr and included General Secretary Mian Athar Hafeez and other senior office bearers.



Rana Mashhood said the government highly values the contribution of overseas Pakistanis and remains committed to introducing policies that facilitate their active participation in Pakistan’s economic and social development.



He said the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme is implementing a comprehensive strategy to provide educational opportunities, technical and vocational training, entrepreneurship support, digital skills, and employment prospects for young Pakistanis.



He added that empowering youth is essential for achieving sustainable economic growth and enhancing Pakistan’s competitiveness in the global economy.



The PMYP chairman emphasized that collaboration with organizations representing overseas Pakistanis would help build stronger links between the Pakistani diaspora and the country’s youth. He noted that Pakistani professionals living abroad possess international experience and expertise that could play an important role in innovation, technology transfer, business development and human resource capacity building.



He said creating platforms that connect overseas Pakistani professionals with talented young Pakistanis through mentorship, internships, investment opportunities, and professional networking would help prepare the country’s youth to compete successfully in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy.



Mehr briefed the PMYP chairman on the foundation’s mission and ongoing initiatives to safeguard the interests of overseas Pakistanis while strengthening their relationship with Pakistan.



He said OPGF has consistently worked to promote the welfare of the Pakistani diaspora and encourage greater engagement between overseas communities and national institutions.



Mehr said overseas Pakistanis have always demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Pakistan by supporting the country through remittances, humanitarian assistance, investment, and professional services. He stressed that these contributions require stronger institutional support and regular coordination with government organizations.



He reaffirmed OPGF’s commitment to working closely with the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme in launching joint initiatives that would engage overseas Pakistani youth and professionals in Pakistan’s development journey.



General Secretary OPGF Mian Athar Hafeez highlighted the need for effective institutional mechanisms to address issues faced by overseas Pakistanis while promoting stronger people-to-people contacts between the diaspora and Pakistan. He said overseas Pakistanis possess tremendous potential to contribute not only financially but also through knowledge sharing, investment, innovation, and community development initiatives.



During the meeting, both sides also discussed organizing joint seminars, conferences, youth exchange programmes, awareness campaigns, and leadership initiatives aimed at strengthening engagement with overseas Pakistani communities around the world.



They agreed to explore practical avenues of cooperation for promoting youth empowerment, encouraging entrepreneurship, enhancing skills development, supporting digital innovation, and facilitating greater participation of overseas Pakistanis in Pakistan’s economic and social development.



The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to maintaining close institutional coordination and transforming the discussions into concrete collaborative initiatives that would benefit overseas Pakistanis, empower Pakistan’s youth, and contribute to Pakistan’s long-term national development agenda.



Man killed, another injured critically in separate shooting incidents in district


Kohat: A man was killed and another critically wounded in two separate shooting incidents in various areas of the district, the police said on Thursday. In an attack, a young man identified as Shakir was shot by unidentified assailants in the Burh area of Kohat.



He received initial medical treatment before being transferred to a hospital in Peshawar due to the severity of his injuries, according to local sources. The shooting came a day after another attack in the Nusrat Khel area on the outskirts of Kohat, where Rab Nawaz, a resident of Charghari Shah Pur, was fatally shot by unknown gunmen.



The attackers fled the scene before law enforcement officials arrived. The police had launched separate investigations into both incidents, but no arrests had been made, they added. The motives behind the attacks remain unknown.



SCCI presents holistic roadmap to boost mutual Pak-Uzbek trade, economic relations


Peshawar: Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has advanced its efforts to establish a strong business to business linkages between Pakistan and Uzbekistan through under joint ventures and the public-private partnership initiative.



A concrete proposal has tabled by President SCCI, Junaid Altaf during a meeting with Shokhrukh Gulamov, the Deputy Minister for Investments, Industry and Trade of Republic of Uzbekistan at sideline of the Business Excellence Award and Conference, hosted by the chamber in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, said in a press release here on Thursday.



Meeting was attended by Trade and Investment Counsellor,. Zaheer Abbas, former president SCCI Faiz Muhammad, former vice president Haris Mufti, Secretary General, Muqtasid Ahsan and Tariq Sethi, Engr. Said Mehmood, Laiq Jan, Dr. Muhibullah Afridi, Atif Shehzad and Shehzad Qaiser and others.



The participants thoroughly discuss opportunities for enhancing bilateral trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Pakistan and Uzbekistan.



The meeting emphasized on strengthening business-to-business collaboration, promoting investment partnerships, and exploring new avenues for commercial engagement between the two countries.



Both sides expressed a shared commitment to fostering stronger economic ties and expanding cooperation for mutual growth and prosperity.



President Junaid Altaf, informed the meeting that SCCI has initiated vigorous efforts to boost the bilateral trade and economic relations between Pakistan and Uzbekistan, adding that the holding of Excellence Award and Investment Conference is part of these efforts, which had been conducted successfully.



The chamber president vowed to continue ongoing joint initiatives to take mutual benefits from each other’s experience, tapping potentials efficiently and establishing strong business to business linkages between Pakistan and Uzbekistan.



Pakistan, Portugal discuss ways to strengthen ties in diverse areas


Islamabad: Pakistan and Portugal on Thursday reviewed the full range of bilateral relations and discussed ways to strengthen political engagement and cooperation in trade and investment, labour mobility, agriculture, renewable energy, information technology, education, tourism, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.



During the fourth round of the delegation level Pakistan-Portugal Bilateral Political Consultations held here, the two sides also discussed opportunities for greater business-to-business engagement, port connectivity, and cooperation in olive cultivation and processing.



The Pakistan delegation was led by Ambassador Ayesha Ali, Additional Secretary (Europe), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Portuguese delegation was headed by Ambassador Helena Malcata, Director-General for Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic.



The two sides exchanged views on regional and international developments and expressed satisfaction with their coordination in multilateral forums.



During the visit, the Portuguese delegation also called on the Foreign Secretary, and exchanged views on bilateral relations and regional and international issues of mutual interest.



The consultations were held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, a press statement issued by the Foreign Office Spokesperson said.



During the consultations, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to regular political dialogue and to further expanding mutually beneficial cooperation. Both also agreed to hold the next round of Bilateral Political Consultations in Lisbon on mutually agreed dates.



World Population day observed in Astore with call for responsible parenthood, sustainable development


Astore: On the occasion of World Population Day, the District Population Welfare Department, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP), organized a dignified ceremony in Astore.



The event was attended by officials from various government departments, social figures, teachers, students, civil society representatives, and a large number of citizens.



Addressing the gathering, the speakers highlighted the significance of World Population Day and observed that rapid population growth has become a major global challenge, placing increasing pressure on healthcare, education, employment, food security, the environment, and natural resources.



They stressed that balanced population growth and the development of a healthy society require effective family planning, improved maternal and child healthcare, women’s empowerment, and greater public awareness.



The speakers reaffirmed their commitment that the Government, the Population Welfare Department, AKRSP, and other partner organizations would continue working together to promote responsible parenthood, healthy families, and sustainable development. They emphasized that these collective efforts are essential to building a better and more prosperous future for coming generations.

A developed capital market indispensable for sustainable economic growth: Arif Habib


Islamabad: A developed capital market is indispensable for sustainable economic growth, veteran businessman Arif Habib said at the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Talk Series.



He also shared insights from over five decades in Pakistan’s capital markets, said a press release issued by the SECP.



The session, attended by SECP Chairman Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu, Commissioners, market institutions, academia and business leaders, explored the evolution of Pakistan’s capital markets, long-term investing and the reforms needed to deepen investor participation.



Opening the session, Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu said the Talk Series aims to institutionalize knowledge-sharing by connecting regulators with experienced market practitioners to support evidence-based policymaking.



He highlighted SECP’s ongoing reforms, including digital investor onboarding, implementation of the T+1 settlement cycle, and initiatives to expand the investor base to 2.5 million through greater financial inclusion and easier market access.



“Our objective is to build a capital market ecosystem that is transparent, accessible and aligned with global standards,” he said.



Reflecting on more than five decades in the market, Arif Habib traced Pakistan’s capital market journey from open-outcry trading floors to today’s technology-driven marketplace.



He emphasized that while markets evolve, the principles of successful investing remain discipline, patience and long-term thinking.



Habib noted that the Pakistan Stock Exchange has delivered an average annual return of around 22 percent over the past 22 years and a 14 percent dollar-denominated return over the last five years.



He stressed that market volatility is temporary, while long-term investment in fundamentally strong companies creates sustainable wealth.



He also underscored the role of capital markets in mobilizing savings, financing businesses, strengthening corporate governance and creating employment across brokerage, asset management, investment banking, research, fintech and advisory services.



He emphasized the need to increase financial literacy, particularly among young Pakistanis, to broaden participation in formal capital markets.
