Islamabad: Islamabad’s district administration has intensified its campaign against professional begging in the capital, with Assistant Commissioner City Maheen Hassan leading an operation in Blue Area that resulted in the detention of 49 individuals from various traffic signals.
Officials said the move is part of ongoing efforts to address organized begging and ensure that support reaches people who genuinely need assistance.
During the operation, teams conducted checks at several busy intersections in Blue Area. A total of 49 beggars were taken into custody and shifted to police lockups for further legal action. The administration stated that the campaign would continue in different parts of the city to discourage begging at public places, roads, and traffic signals.
According to officials, the presence of professional beggars at major intersections created difficulties for commuters and often exploits public sympathy. Authorities said that organized begging networks can also affect the distribution of support intended for deserving individuals and families.
The district administration appealed to citizens to cooperate with the anti-begging campaign. Residents have been urged not to encourage begging and instead help authorities identify individuals involved in the practice. Officials emphasized that public cooperation is necessary to make the campaign effective and ensure that welfare assistance reaches those who truly require it.
Citizens were also requested to report such cases through the district administration’s control room. The administration has provided the helpline number 051-9108084 for complaints and information regarding beggars operating in public areas. Reports received through the control room would help authorities take timely action and monitor locations where begging activities are frequently observed.
Officials reiterated that the campaign was aimed at reducing organized begging while protecting the rights of deserving people who might need social support. The administration said it would continue enforcement measures and public awareness efforts in coordination with relevant departments.
