8 including PIMS ED, suspended over hospital fire incident: Tariq Fazal

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, stated on Saturday that eight officials, including the Executive Director (ED) of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Deputy Executive Director, doctors and other concerned officers and officials, had been suspended following the initial findings into the hospital fire incident.

Speaking to a private television channel, the minister said the suspensions were made in light of recommendations made by inquiry committee.

He clarified that action would not be limited to suspensions, adding that further steps would be initiated under criminal proceedings to prevent such incidents in the future.

Responding to a question, Dr Fazal said the incident was primarily the result of negligence on the part of hospital administration and staff, who had failed to identify and address a fault in the nursery.

He further said the Health Minister had already offered to present himself for accountability and had even offered his resignation on moral grounds, saying that he was always very supportive in the provision of funds requested by the hospital to ensure state-of-the-art facilities to the patients.’
