Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority (KPFSandHFA) carried out major enforcement operations in different areas of Peshawar, exposing units involved in the production of adulterated spices and fake tomato ketchup.
Large quantities of hazardous food items were seized and destroyed on the spot, while the involved units were sealed.
According to the Food Authority spokesperson on Wednesday, the operations were conducted on the basis of confidential information. During the raids, food safety teams recovered 400 kilograms of adulterated spices, including bran and used, unfit cooking oil from a spice manufacturing unit. The unit was also found to have poor hygiene conditions and was using substandard raw materials.
In separate actions, the teams raided two fake tomato ketchup manufacturing units, from where 1,200 liters of unhygienic and hazardous fake ketchup were recovered and destroyed on the spot. Both units were immediately sealed for serious violations of food safety laws.
The spokesperson added that heavy fines have been imposed on the owners for severe violations of hygiene and food safety standards, and further legal proceedings have also been initiated.
Director General KP Food Safety and Halal Food Authority Kashif Iqbal Jilani, while appreciating the efforts of the food safety teams, stated that no leniency will be shown to those who play with the health of citizens and strict implementation of food safety laws will be ensured under all circumstances.
