Lahore: Crime Control Department (CCD) Sub-Inspector (SI) was martyred on Wednesday while attempting to arrest a suspected dangerous criminal in Rawalpindi, with the suspect later killed in a gunbattle with a CCD team, officials said.
According to a CCD spokesperson, the department was conducting operations against serious and organised crime across Punjab on the directives of Additional IG Sohail Zafar Chattha.
The spokesperson said SI Adnan Ghayor of CCD Rawalpindi had been pursuing suspect Umar Khan, who had previously escaped an arrest attempt after allegedly opening fire on a CCD official.
On Wednesday, the sub-inspector spotted the suspect in a market in the Chaklala area and attempted to arrest him. The suspect allegedly resisted arrest and opened fire on Ghayor, killing him on the spot, before fleeing the scene.
CCD special teams continued their pursuit and traced the suspect to another location in Rawalpindi a few hours later, the spokesperson said.
The suspect was asked to surrender but allegedly opened fire on the CCD team instead. The personnel returned fire in self-defence, killing Umar Khan in the ensuing exchange of fire.
The CCD spokesperson paid tribute to Adnan Ghayor, said department personnel were making sacrifices in the fight against organised crime in Punjab.
The spokesperson said the department would continue its operations against criminal elements across the province.
