Peshawar: A high-level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary of Planning and Development, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islam Zeb, to review groundwater levels in urban in collaboration with a UNICEF technical team.
During the session, the Additional Chief Secretary received a comprehensive briefing on the current state of underground water reserves in the city. He lauded the extensive research and data collection carried out by the UNICEF team, acknowledging its significance for future policy planning.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Islam Zeb stated that the Planning and Development Department was fully resolved to safeguard groundwater resources in urban Peshawar. He directed officials to streamline all immediate and long-term interventions related to recharge, storage, and sustainability of the aquifers.
He further emphasized that projects already near execution or currently in the pipeline must be coordinated and made more effective to ensure tangible results. All activities, he added, should be synchronized to avoid duplication and maximize impact on water security.
The meeting was attended by Chief Economist Shahzad Mahboob, Chief IDS, and other senior officials from relevant departments, reflecting a multi-stakeholder approach to tackling the growing water challenge in the provincial capital.
