Mirpur (ajk): PML (N) nominee Dr Muhammad Najeeb Naqi Khan was elected President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, securing 32 votes in the presidential election emerging as the 23rd elected President of the state.
The victorious AJK President Dr. Najeeb Naqi defeated his only rival candidate Latif Akbar Chaudhry of PPP who secured 13 votes in the election held in Azad Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly’ special session held in the State metropolis on Thursday with Speaker Ch. Tariq Farooq in the chair, reporter AJK Correspondent reported.
45 out of a total of 46 newly- elected members of the AJK Legislative Assembly cast their votes to elect Dr. Najeeb Naqi as new President of the AJK State for next 5-year constitutional term.
His election marks a new chapter in the constitutional history of the AJK presidency, which dates back to October 24, 1947, when Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan had emerged as the first (founder)president of Azad Kashmir.
Dr. Muhammad Najeeb Naqi Khan, born in Rawalpindi on January 19, 1964, hails from a prominent political, social and educational family of Poonch with a longstanding tradition of public service spanning several generations.
Dr. Najeeb Naqi Khan’s father, Colonel (Retd) Muhammad Naqi Khan, served in the Pakistan Army before entering politics in Azad Jammu and Kashmir after his retirement.
He served as Adviser to the Prime Minister of AJK from 1975 to 1977. He was elected to the AJK Legislative Assembly in 1985 and served as Minister for Health and Food from 1988 to 1990.
