Gilgit: The European Union (EU), Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and NPAK Energy have announced a series of measures to improve electricity services in Hunza, including the formal launch of the first phase of the System Loss Reduction Programme and commencement of rehabilitation work on the 3-megawatt Misgar Hydropower Plant.

The initiatives are being implemented under the Energy Plus Project in partnership with the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan. Under the first phase of the loss reduction programme, NPAK Energy has upgraded the transmission, distribution and metering infrastructure in Hunza. The work includes installation of a new substation and transformer, 10 transformer substations and 55 upgraded transformers, besides laying 25.3 kilometres of transmission lines, 86.5 kilometres of distribution lines and 460 kilometres of service lines. Around 9,000 energy meters have also been installed to improve transparency and accuracy in electricity consumption measurement. As a result, system losses have been reduced from 47 percent to 15 percent, while the voltage supplied to consumers has improved from 90-130 volts to 200-220 volts.

The initiative has also helped address electricity shortages and frequent tripping issues. A new energy meter laboratory has been established for testing meters, while a new billing system is expected to be introduced soon. During the ceremony, rehabilitation work on the 3MW Misgar Hydropower Plant, the largest such facility in Hunza, was also formally launched. The plant is currently operating at only around 30 percent of its installed capacity due to deterioration of its civil infrastructure. Its rehabilitation is expected to increase local renewable energy generation and help address electricity shortages in Hunza.
