RAWALPINDI:Global Handwashing Day was observed to highlight the importance of hand hygiene and promote the habit of washing hands with soap.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, regular handwashing is an effective way to prevent diarrhoeal diseases, respiratory infections and other communicable diseases.

Health experts stressed that hands should be washed thoroughly before preparing and eating food, after using the toilet, and after coughing or sneezing. They emphasized the need to clean the palms, backs of hands, areas between fingers and around the fingernails.

They said promoting hand hygiene among children and ensuring the availability of clean water and soap in educational institutions could help reduce the spread of diseases.

Experts added that adopting the simple habit of handwashing could protect people from various illnesses and play an important role in building a healthier society.
