Karachi: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh Chapter General Secretary Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi along with PPP District Keamari President Liaquat Askani led a protest rally against Indian unilateral suspension of Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) under a slogan “Marsoon Marsoon, Sindhu Na Desoon”, here on Sunday.
The rally was taken out from Baldia Town Office to Sher Shah Chowk on the directives of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari organized by Pakistan Peoples Party District Keamari.
Addressing the participants of rally, Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi said that India’s unilateral attempt to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty constitutes a blatant violation of international law and binding international agreements, besides posing a grave threat to regional peace and stability.
He stressed that using water as a weapon or an instrument of political coercion is an extremely dangerous and inhumane act. Any attempt to block or usurp Pakistan’s share of water, he warned, would be considered an attack on the country’s economy, agriculture, food security, national security and the fundamental rights of its people.
Paying tribute to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for adopting an unequivocal and principled stance against India’s water aggression, Senator Mehdi said that the Chairman’s position on Pakistan’s water rights echoes the sentiments of all 240 million Pakistanis.
He reaffirmed that the PPP would continue to defend Pakistan’s water rights at every forum and would never allow anyone to deprive the nation of its rightful share of the waters of the River Indus.
Describing the Indus River as Pakistan’s lifeline, he said it represents the country’s agriculture, economy, culture and survival of future generations.
He reiterated the Party’s unwavering resolve to continue its struggle for the protection of Pakistan’s water rights through every constitutional, legal, diplomatic and democratic forum.
PPP District Keamari President and MPA Liaquat Ali Askani said that under the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP would continue to raise its voice at every forum in defence of the River Indus and Pakistan’s legitimate water rights.
He said that the dedicated workers of District Keamari stand shoulder to shoulder with their leadership in every challenging hour and would continue to play a proactive role in every democratic struggle aimed at safeguarding Pakistan’s national interests, particularly the protection of the River Indus and the country’s water rights.
PPP District Keamari General Secretary Habib Jadoon, Senior Vice President Faisal Younis, Deputy Information Secretary Rashid Khan and PPP local leaders participated in the rally.
