Sukkur: All government and semi government institutions remained closed across Khairpur Mirs district on Tuesday due to the death of the last ruler of the erstwhile Khairpur State, Mir Ali Murad Khan Talpur II.
The district administration announced a local public holiday in the entire district for today to mourn his demise.
Accordingly, all government offices, educational institutions, and semi government departments remained closed. An atmosphere of grief prevails in Kot Diji and across the district.
Mir Ali Murad Khan II, 93, died on Monday at a private hospital where he was under treatment. His son, Prince Mir Mehdi Raza Talpur, confirmed his death.
During his reign, the State of Khairpur acceded to Pakistan on Oct 3, 1947. He remained the Wali of the state from 1947 to 1954. The separate rule of the state came to an end with the introduction of the One Unit scheme in 1955.
With his death, a significant chapter in the history of the former princely state has come to an end. The symbols of the Talpur dynasty including Kot Diji Fort, Faiz Mahal and Mehrano Jungle still exist today.Condolences have poured in from political and social circles over his demise.
