Medical experts sound alarm on allergy season, advise masks and indoor precautions

Islamabad

Islamabad: Amid the surge of seasonal allergies, a general physician on Saturday advised residents to take extra measures to protect against pollen and cough-related allergies, including wearing masks, drinking kehwa or green tea and limiting outdoor activities.

While speaking to a local media channel, Assistant Prof and General Physician at JPMC, Dr Irfan Siddiqui, explained that January to March marks the peak season for pollen allergies in Islamabad. He noted that although the administration has been removing allergy-inducing trees, residents should avoid areas with these trees and take precautions to reduce exposure.

He emphasized that seasonal changes, fog and vehicle pollution can worsen allergic reactions, making lifestyle modifications essential.

Dr Siddiqui recommended practical measures for protection, including wearing N90 masks, limiting outdoor activities, isolating oneself when pollen levels are high and maintaining a healthy routine.

He also advised residents to recognize and monitor symptoms of allergies, such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and mild cough, so they can respond promptly and seek medical attention if necessary.

Responding to questions about the rising cases of cough and ‘super flu, in Karachi, Dr Siddiqui said that while seasonal allergies can aggravate respiratory symptoms, vigilance is crucial.

He urged people to differentiate between allergy symptoms and infections, maintain hygiene, and consult a physician if symptoms persist or worsen.

He stressed that timely precautions and awareness can significantly reduce the impact of both seasonal allergies and respiratory illnesses.

He further noted that pollen allergy commonly causes symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, scratchy throat and mild coughing. In some cases, it can also trigger headaches, fatigue, and difficulty breathing, especially in individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions, making early recognition and preventive measures essential.

To better manage pollen allergies during the season, he advised keeping track of the time of year when symptoms are at their worst. He said, adding, when that period approaches, you can take preventive measures, such as receiving allergy shots or taking medications that strengthen your immunity and help build resistance to pollen.
