UHS students visit PDMA

Lahore: A delegation of students from the University of Health Sciences (UHS) visited the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab on Friday to gain insights into its disaster management system.

During the visit, the students were briefed on the PDMA Punjab's operational framework for addressing natural disasters. They toured the PDMA Control Room, where Director General (DG) Irfan Ali Kathia highlighted the authority's 24/7 communication system with all districts in Punjab.

DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia explained that PDMA remains on high alert to tackle challenges such as floods, COVID-19, dengue, drought, smog, and heat waves. He emphasized the importance of advance warnings and alerts issued to the administration regarding potential disasters like heat waves, heavy rains, and floods.

Addressing the delegation, the DG underlined the severity of climate change in Pakistan and stressed that combating smog and other climate-related challenges are top priorities for the Punjab government. The students were also introduced to PDMA's flood simulation model and received insights into the authority's response mechanisms and rehabilitation efforts for disaster-affected families.

The students actively participated in the session, posing questions about PDMA's operations and victim rehabilitation programs. DG Kathia assured that financial assistance for disaster-affected families is provided under the Punjab government's policies.

At the conclusion of the visit, the students expressed appreciation for the Punjab government's proactive measures in rehabilitating flood victims. DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia presented a commemorative shield to the delegation.

This visit reflects the importance of fostering awareness among the youth about disaster management and the steps being taken to mitigate the impact of climate change in the province.

NA deputy speaker shares grief over demise of Bukhari’s wife

Islamabad: National Assembly Deputy Speaker Syed Mir Ghulam Mustafa Shah on Friday conveyed his profound sorrow and sympathy over the passing of the wife of former Senate Chairman Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari.

In his condolence message to Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, the deputy speaker expressed his heartfelt sympathy over the passing of his wife, describing her death as an irreplaceable loss and a profound shock to the grieving family.

'I share the sorrow and grief of the family during this difficult time,' said the deputy speaker, offering his deepest condolences to the bereaved.

Deputy Speaker also prayed to Allah Almighty to grant the deceased a high rank in Jannah and to bestow patience upon the family to endure this immense loss.

Governor Tessori takes notice of students’ anxiety over BIEK exam results

Karachi: Sindh Governor Mohammed Kamran Khan Tessori on Friday took notice of students' dissatisfaction over the results of examinations of Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) and sought a report from the Board's Chairman.

He told the officials concerned that the scrutiny of the examination results was inevitable and directed to address the reservations of girls and boys students of Karachi.

The Governor said that the students have also previously raised their reservations.

He further said that injustice would not be tolerated with the students of Karachi.

DC reviews progress of ongoing polio drive in Chaghi


Quetta: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Chaghi Atta- Al-Muneem visited Gardi Jungle Camp on Friday where he met local elders and reviewed the progress of the ongoing polio campaign.



During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner held a meeting with local elders, in which the basic problems, facilities and security issues of the area were discussed in detail.



Local residents presented their problems and demands, which the Deputy Commissioner assured full cooperation in resolving them.



The DC reviewed the performance of the vaccination teams involved in the polio campaign and directed them to ensure that 100 percent of children are vaccinated against polio.



He also urged the teams to create awareness among the public about the polio vaccine so that the campaign is successful.



He directed the relevant departments to take immediate steps for the betterment of the area and assured that the government would take all possible steps to resolve the problems of the people.



He said that the government is committed to the welfare of the people and the completion of development projects. The local population appreciated this effort by Deputy Commissioner Atta Al-Muneem and expressed hope that their problems would be resolved soon.

Joint body to be formed to address traders’ grievances regarding property tax


Peshawar: Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Department of Excise and Taxation and Narcotics Control, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa decided to form a joint committee to address traders’ grievances about property tax and other issues.



The decision came during an awareness/consultative session on property tax jointly organized by SCCI and Department of E and T Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the chamber house.



The proposed committee will present apprehensions of traders regarding collection of property taxes of various slabs and would suggest reducing them in an appropriate manner with a mutual consensus.



Officials through a multimedia presentation briefed participants about imposition of various categories and slab property tax, KP Finance Act 2024, different relief measures for business community and residents through amendments in the Act.



Both sides have agreed to initiate collective steps to avoid collection of excessive and double property tax and announced to form a joint committee, consisting of representatives from SCCI and E and T deptt for this purpose.



Earlier, Fazal Moqeem in his introductory remarks said the business community wanted to pay taxes but irrational and unnecessary taxes were unacceptable.



He stressed the need to reduce the ratio of property tax and other levies and avoid disrespecting traders during actions for collection of taxes.



Fuad Ishaq and Shuakat Ali Khan also spoke on the occasion, highlighting the traders’ reservations, increase in the ratio of property tax and demanded the abolishment of unnecessary and unjust taxes.



Traders also presented comprehensive proposals for amiable resolution of the traders’ issues.



Officials from E and T department agreed with recommendations of the participants and assured to remove all grievances of the traders and provision of facilities under one-window operation.
