Islamabad: The name of Pakistan’s first-ever Lunar Rover, which is set to land on the Moon aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission, will be announced at a ceremony to be held at the headquarters of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on August 13.
SUPARCO had earlier launched a public naming competition inviting citizens to propose a unique and meaningful name for the country’s first Lunar Rover. The initiative attracted around 4, 000 entries from across the country.
Following the evaluation process, nine shortlisted participants have suggested the name that has now been finalized for Pakistan’s Lunar Rover. All nine participants will attend the naming ceremony at SUPARCO Headquarters.
The final name will be selected through balloting among the nine shortlisted participants, with the winner receiving a cash prize of Rs. 100, 000 along with national recognition.
According to the SUPARCO, the Lunar Rover is planned to be deployed on the Moon as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission in 2028, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s growing participation in lunar exploration and space science.
The naming initiative was aimed at providing the public an opportunity to become part of Pakistan’s historic space journey and contribute to the identity of the country’s first Lunar Rover.
