Lahore: Prosecutor General Punjab Irfan Sadiq Tarar on Monday took serious notice of the alleged sexual assault of a mentally disabled girl by a police officer while in custody within the jurisdiction of Ghaziabad Police Station. declaring the case ‘high profile’ and ordering a transparent investigation on merit.
In view of the seriousness and sensitivity of the matter. the prosecutor general summoned the investigating officer along with the case record under Section 10(3)(c) of the Punjab Criminal Prosecution Service Act. 2006. for a review of the investigation and issuance of a line of inquiry.
Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Faryal Malik appeared before the Prosecutor General along with the relevant record.
After reviewing the case record. Irfan Sadiq Tarar directed the investigating officer to conduct the investigation in a completely transparent and impartial manner in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the law of evidence.
He stressed the need to properly collect. preserve and document all scientific. forensic and medical evidence. including DNA and medico-legal reports. so that a strong evidentiary case could be presented before the trial court.
The prosecutor general directed that all legal requirements be fulfilled to bring the accused police officer to justice at the earliest. while ensuring that the victim and her family receive justice.
Irfan Sadiq Tarar reiterated that the state would not tolerate elements who. despite being responsible for enforcing the law. allegedly violate it.
He said that. in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. the protection of women and provision of justice were among the government’s foremost priorities and legal responsibilities. He assured that all available resources would be utilised to ensure justice in the case.
