RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Women University (RWU) on Thursday organized an awareness session on Hepatitis, Polio and Thalassemia followed by a blood donation camp.
One day blood donation camp was conducted in collaboration with Jamila Sultana Foundation and Pakistan Sweet Home at the RWU campus for Thalassemia patients, a news release said.
Project Director of Jamila Sultana Foundation, Colonel Tauqeer briefed students about the process of Donation to Transfusion.
Expressing his views on the occasion, he said that in order to prevent the disease thalassemia status needed to be checked through proper testing before getting married.
In Pakistan, 7,000 infants were born with thalassemia disorder every year while 5-6% are thalassemia carriers.
Founder of Pakistan Sweet Home, Zamurad Khan is also working in collaboration with Jamila Sultana Foundation for blood collection drives.
He visited the camp and appreciated volunteer students for donating blood. He motivated students to play their part in giving a helping hand for the community.
Expressing her views Dr. Anila Kamal, Vice Chancellor RWU, appreciated the students who came forward for this noble cause.
Dr. Rida Munir, Medical Officer RWU, delivered the lecture raising awareness for Hepatitis and Polio.
A significant number of volunteers turned up for blood donation and ample amount of blood collection was made from RWU. The blood donors who volunteered for the donation of blood included students and staff of RWU.
Later, after the session a MoU was also signed between Rawalpindi Women University and Jamila Sultana Foundation. Prof. Dr. Anila Kamal, Vice Chancellor RWU, and Col. Tauqeer, Project Director of JSF, signed the MoU to join hands in the noble cause of Thalassemia prevention and support to Thalassemia patients in terms of blood donations.
