Sukkur: Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur on Friday observed the International Day of Sign Languages 2026 with a call for inclusive education and equal rights for deaf persons.
The event was organized by the Department of Special Education in collaboration with the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD), Government of Sindh, as part of the International Week of Deaf People being observed from September 21-27 under the global theme, declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights.
This year’s observance holds special significance as it marks the 75th anniversary of the World Federation of the Deaf and 20 years of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
Addressing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Meritorious Prof. Dr. Yousuf Khushk said sign language is not merely a means of communication but a matter of identity, dignity and fundamental human rights. Deaf persons do not need sympathy, they need access, opportunity and an environment where their abilities can flourish,’ he said, adding that universities must remove barriers for Deaf learners, especially in rural areas.
He stressed promotion of Pakistan Sign Language (PSL) in education and teacher training and directed the department to prepare a PC-I for strengthening facilities for students with disabilities with a vision up to PhD level. He also announced a student society for sign language and Deaf inclusion.
The programme featured a panel discussion with Deaf teachers and interpreters, a session on No Access Without Pakistan Sign Language, a ‘Learn 10 PSL Signs’ activity, advocacy videos and a campus access walk. The Deaf Flag was hoisted alongside the university flag.
Dean Faculty of Education Prof. Dr. Liaquat Ali Chandio, DEPD Regional Director Abdul Qudoos Memon and Incharge Chairman Special Education Dr. Zahid Hussain Sahito also spoke on the occasion.
