Karachi: The Sindh government has decided that instead of purchasing agricultural seeds from the private sector, it will provide farmers with its own government-produced seeds at affordable prices. It has also decided to carry out geo-marking of all agricultural lands belonging to the Sindh Seed Corporation.

An important meeting was held at the Sindh Secretariat under the chairmanship of Sindh Agriculture Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar to review the performance of the Sindh Seed Corporation, a communique said.

The meeting was attended by Agriculture Secretary Muhammad Zaman Narejo, Additional Secretary Idrees Khoso, Managing Director of Sindh Seed Corporation Abdul Fattah Halio, and other officials.

During the meeting, a detailed review of the overall performance of the Sindh Seed Corporation was conducted. Officials presented performance reports, while the Managing Director presented the future plan of the corporation, which was agreed upon by the Agriculture Minister.

Briefing the meeting, MD Abdul Fattah Halio informed that compared to previous years, wheat cultivation had increased by 352 acres, with a total of 2242.85 acres under wheat cultivation. He further reported that income of 12 million rupees was generated from cotton and 16 million rupees from rice (paddy).

It was also informed that employees of the corporation had been paid salaries for four months, with funds available for another four months. Farmers were provided with 2,170 bags of wheat, while 295 maunds of cotton were ginned. Revenue was also earned from fish ponds.

The meeting was told that two FIRs had been registered against land grabbers who had encroached upon the corporation’s agricultural land. 120 acres of land in Ghotki were recovered from illegal occupation and cultivated with wheat.

Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar directed the MD to ensure geo-marking of all agricultural lands of the Sindh Seed Corporation. The boundaries, area, and location of the land will be recorded in computers using GPS and maps, so that the exact location and size of the land can be identified. He also instructed that the corporation’s performance should be highlighted to the public through social media.

Addressing the meeting, the Agriculture Minister said that the performance of the Sindh Seed Corporation had improved significantly.

He added that the Sindh government is striving to ensure that in the future, farmers of the province are provided with quality government seeds at low cost through the corporation, and that work on this should be accelerated. He instructed the corporation to work more effectively to achieve this goal.

The Minister further stated that the performance report presented by the Managing Director will first be submitted to the sub-committee of the Sindh Cabinet, and then presented before the full Cabinet.

He remarked that previously the Sindh Seed Corporation was unable to stand on its own feet, but now the institution has not only become financially stable, it is also providing farmers with cheap and quality seeds.
