Islamabad: The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has launched World Space Week 2026 at its headquarters here, highlighting Pakistan’s growing role in space exploration, rocket technology and scientific research.
SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan inaugurated the week-long celebrations, which carry the theme ‘Rocket Revolution’, emphasizing the importance of space science and technology in advancing scientific research and exploring new frontiers.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the chairman said public interest in space science and research, particularly among students, continues to grow in Pakistan.
He highlighted Pakistan’s ambitious space initiatives, including plans to send a Pakistani astronaut to China’s space station as a payload specialist and develop a locally manufactured lunar rover for deployment at the Moon’s south pole.
The Pakistani lunar rover will become part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission, marking an important step in Pakistan’s participation in international lunar exploration, SUPARCO said.
Director General SUPARCO highlighted the vital role of space technology in scientific research and space exploration, while the ceremony also underscored how rocket technology enables access to space and delivers practical benefits on Earth.
SUPARCO Secretary Brigadier Munir Ahmed Asad (Retd) also highlighted the significance of World Space Week in promoting public awareness and encouraging young people to explore opportunities in space science and technology.
SUPARCO has been associated with the World Space Week Association as Pakistan’s National Coordinator since 2005 and has consistently secured positions among the top three countries in World Space Week activities since 2013.
Students from Beaconhouse School, Tipu Sultan Campus, presented an engaging skit on the theme ‘Rocket Revolution’, putting forward arguments both in favour of and against rocket technology to highlight its significance in space exploration.
A series of educational, scientific and public awareness activities will be organised during World Space Week to promote understanding of space science and technology, particularly among young people.
SUPARCO reaffirmed its commitment to fostering scientific curiosity and raising awareness among youth about the expanding opportunities in space research and technology.
