Mirpur: A visually impaired resident of Samahni, Bhimber district, Muhammad Hanif, on Tuesday appealed to DIG Police Mirpur to take notice of what he described as police excesses against his family and ensure justice. Addressing a press conference at the Kashmir Press Club Mirpur, he alleged that Islamgarh police, allegedly acting at the behest of influential individuals, had registered a false case against his brother and deprived the family of its source of livelihood.

Hanif said his brother, Muhammad Qadeer, had been running a sawmill in Islamgarh for a long time and regularly paid rent and other dues to its owners. He alleged that since July, local influential individuals, identified as Qaiser Mahmood and Abu Bakr Qaiser, had been attempting to take control of the business and had created difficulties for his family.

He claimed that despite a court stay order, a case was registered against his brother on allegations of stealing timber and other equipment, which he termed baseless. Hanif said affidavits from timber suppliers and the owners to whom his brother had allegedly paid rent were available in support of his claims, while local residents could also testify about his brother’s involvement in the business. He further alleged that some overseas Pakistanis were supporting Qaiser and his associates.

Hanif said his brother was the sole breadwinner for his 13 children, while he himself supported six children, adding that the cases had severely affected the family’s livelihood. He urged the DIG Mirpur to order a fair investigation, protect the family from alleged harassment and ensure justice. Several local residents accompanied him to the press conference and presented affidavits in support of the family.
