Rawalpindi: Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Wednesday said that security forces had killed 54 terrorists belonging to the Indian proxy Fitna al Khwarij in Balochistan, while 42 security personnel, including police officials, and civilians embraced martyrdom during the past four days.

Addressing a press conference on the security situation in Balochistan, the DG ISPR said that India was behind the recent wave of terrorism in the province, saying hostile elements could not tolerate Pakistan’s progress and stability.

He said that the Afghan Taliban regime was providing manpower to terrorist groups operating against Pakistan.

He said that most of the terrorists killed were Afghan nationals. Referring to the recent attack in Karachi, he said three of the four attackers were Afghan nationals and that the entire operation had been planned in Afghanistan.

“They have a problem with Pakistan’s progress and honour. Balochistan is the life and glory of Pakistan, and its prosperity is a reality that no one can change,” he said.

Sharing details of the recent terrorist incidents in Balochistan, the DG ISPR said that there have been three major terrorist incidents in the past four days.

He said the first incident took place on July 4-5 when terrorists belonging to Indian proxy Fitna al Khwarij attacked the innocent local population in Hanna Urak. The residents fought back very valiantly and forced them to flee, he said.

He said four brave innocent citizens were martyred and six sustained injuries during the incident.

In the second incident, he said that the terrorists carried out a multidirectional attack on a police check-post, which guards Pumping Station No.3 of Mangi Dam in Ziarat.

He said that the policemen stood their ground and sent 15 kharji to hell. However nine policemen embraced martyrdom in the incident, he said.

The DG said earlier this week, at least nine policemen, including two station house officers (SHOs), were martyred in a terrorist attack on a police post in Balochistan’s Ziarat district while the security forces killed 15 terrorists in a clearance operation following the attack.

Regarding the third terrorist incident, the DG ISPR said that today an army convoy was came under attack in which 11 soldiers including junior commissioned officer (JCO) embraced martyrdom while 14 terrorists of Baloch Liberation Army were killed.

Moreover, the DG ISPR said, the security forces killed six terrorists in an operation in Kharan and another eight terrorists in Dalbandin.

Multan: The district administration on Wednesday reviewed preparations for the three-day 787th annual Urs celebrations of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya Multani, scheduled to commence on July 20. Deputy Commissioner Dr Faisal Saleem directed all departments to ensure smooth arrangements for the thousands of devotees expected to attend the religious event. The preparations were reviewed at a meeting chaired by the deputy commissioner and attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Rashid Mehmood, Assistant Commissioner City Azki Sehar and senior officials of the district administration.

Representatives of the police, Auqaf Department, Municipal Corporation, Rescue 1122 and other departments briefed the meeting on security, traffic management, sanitation, emergency response and other operational plans for the Urs. Addressing the meeting, Dr Faisal Saleem said devotees would be provided every possible facility and directed the departments concerned to ensure effective security, improved cleanliness and efficient management throughout the three-day event. He said comprehensive arrangements should be made for pilgrims’ accommodation, food and traffic management to facilitate visitors.

The deputy commissioner instructed all district departments to establish camps at Qila Kohna Qasim Bagh during the Urs to provide round-the-clock services and maintain close coordination. He further directed the police to remain on high alert to respond promptly to any emergency, while comprehensive screening of the shrine premises and pilgrims’ accommodation sites would be carried out to ensure a secure and peaceful environment for devotees.

Peshawar: The Pakistan Academy for Rural Development (PARD) here on Wednesday organized a day-long training session for officials from federal and provincial government departments on strengthening community resilience through disaster risk reduction (DRR), emergency response, and relief management.

Officials from various federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government organizations including Associated Press of Pakistan National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Tehsil Municipal Administrations (TMAs), and district administrations attended the training.

Participants were briefed on the identification and resolution of issues related to disaster risk reduction, government policies for mitigating natural and man-made disasters, and strategies for responding to hazards such as earthquakes, floods, forest fires, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

PDMA Adviser on disaster risk management, Ismail Khan Yousafzai, highlighted various types of disasters as well as hazards and outlined the government’s efforts to mitigate their impact.

He said that in the event of disasters such as floods or earthquakes, the immediate priority is rescue operations, followed by rehabilitation and reconstruction.

He stressed that enhanced coordination, effective planning, and close collaboration among government departments and relief organizations could significantly reduce human casualties and economic losses during natural and man-made disasters.

“The impact of major disasters such as the devastating 2005 earthquake, the 2010 floods, TDPs and the COVID-19 pandemic could be minimized through collective efforts by communities and government institutions,” he said.

Ismail Yousafzai said the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the country’s tiered disaster management system were established under the National Disaster Management Act, 2010.

He said the primary role of PDMA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is to strengthen disaster preparedness and management across the province, with emphasis on prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

He added that the authority also serves as the lead agency for coordinating relief operations, providing assistance to affected communities, and managing emergency situations.

Ismail Yousafzai said that 17 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are vulnerable to disasters, including floods, forest fires, GLOFs, heatwaves, and cloudbursts, due to the province’s geography and climate-induced weather variations.

He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the first province to approve a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) policy through its provincial cabinet. Under the policy, a Disaster Risk Management Fund (DRMF) will be established to ensure the timely provision of relief to disaster-affected people in future.

He further informed participants that an oversight committee comprising representatives of all relevant departments is being constituted to oversee the effective implementation of the DRR policy.

He said the offices of Additional Deputy Commissioners (Relief) are being strengthened across all districts, while efforts are underway to post PDMA officers in every district to help improve the speed and efficiency of future relief operations.

Yousafzai also announced that, in addition to offering six-month internships to students of public and private educational institutions, the government plans to empower communities at the union council level to strengthen disaster risk reduction efforts.

Speaking on the occasion, Director Training PARD Muhammad Arshad said the institute has so far trained more than 50,000 officials from various government departments since its inception.

He said the on-campus training programme was organized in line with the vision of Director General PARD Captain (Retd.) Usman Gul and formed part of the institute’s broader capacity-building initiatives in collaboration with the National Institute of Public Administration and the Pakistan Provincial Services Academy to strengthen disaster management capabilities of government officials.

The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session. The participants thanked the PARD for holding on campus physical training for Govt officials on DRRs.
