Misinformation case: ATC extends judicial remand of woman


Lahore: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday extended the judicial remand of Sarah Khan, accused of inciting public unrest by falsely claiming to be the mother of an alleged rape victim from a private college in Lahore, for another eight days.



Earlier, the police produced the accused before ATC Judge Manzer Ali Gill upon the expiry of her judicial remand. The investigating officer informed the court that the challan (charge sheet) was in the final stages of preparation and would be filed soon. He requested the court to extend the judicial remand of the accused.



Upon hearing this, the court extended the judicial remand for another eight days and ordered the accused to be produced upon the expiry of the remand term on January 10.



The Gulberg police had registered a case against the accused under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).



In a video widely circulated on social media, the accused claimed to be the mother of a student allegedly assaulted at a private college in Lahore. The video caused significant panic, anger, and fear among students, leading to protests and chaos at the institution. Police alleged that the video was fabricated to gain social media views, with false claims intended to stir emotions and spread misinformation.

DC Matiari chairs meeting of DDMA to review emergency preparedness

Hyderabad: Deputy Commissioner Matiari Muhammad Yousif Shaikh presided over the first meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) for 2025. The meeting took place at Latif Hall in the Deputy Commissioner's Office, Matiari and was attended by representatives and officials from all relevant departments in the district.

The meeting reviewed integrated strategies and effective planning to address any potential emergency situations in the district. Addressing the participants, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the need for all departments to utilize their resources and perform their duties efficiently to ensure a swift and effective response to natural disasters or other emergencies. He directed the departments to stay prepared as per the SOPs and prioritize public safety above all.

During the session, various departments provided detailed briefings on their preparedness and resources. Suggestions for future measures and enhanced cooperation were also discussed. The Deputy Commissioner assured participants that the district administration would extend all possible support to ensure readiness and effective disaster management.

Services exports grew by 7.8% in 05 months of FY 2024-25

Islamabad:: Services exports from the country during first five months of the current financial year grew by 7.8 percent as compared to the exports of the corresponding period of the last year.

During the period form July-November, 2024 services worth $3.275 billion were exported as compared to the exports of $3.044 billion of the same period of the last year, according to the trade data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

During the period under review services imports into the country also grew by 2.88 per cent as it was recorded at $4.425 billion as against the imports of $4.301 billion of the same period of the last year, it added.

In first five months of the current financial year, the services trade deficit contracted 9.48 percent as compared to the five months of the last financial year, the data reveled.

On year on year basis, the services exports from the country during the month of November 2024 grew by 6.15 percent as it was recorded at $657.69 million as compared to the exports of $634.39 million of the same month of the last year, it added.

Meanwhile, the services imports into the country grew by 4.60 percent and reached to $828.56 million in November 2024 as compared to the imports of $792.15 million of the month of November 2023, it added .

On year on year basis, the services trade balance narrowed by 3.10 percent as compared to the trade balance of the same period of the last year, the data reveled.

On month on month basis, the services exports from the country decreased by 1.76 percent in November 2024 against the month of October 2024 as it was recorded at $675.69 million as compared to the exports of $687.79 million, it added.

Meanwhile, services imports went also down by 13.07 percent during the period under review as it was recorded at $828.56 million as against the imports of $953.16 million of the previous month (October), it added.

Versatile comedian Lehri remembered on birth anniversary

Islamabad:: Birth anniversary of versatile comedian Safeer Ullah Siddqui better known as Lehri was observed on Thursday.

Born on January 2,1929, Lehri was one of the greatest comedians who made his name through film career spanning over three decades from from 1950s to 1980s. His first film, Anokhi, was released in 1956, and his last production was Dhanak in 1986. The vast majority of his films have been in Urdu, though he did perform in a few Punjabi productions.

He won the Nigar Award 12 times for various films between 1963 and 1986.

He died on September 12,2012 in Karachi at the age of 83.

Police arrested 10,566 accused in drug-related cases in 2024

Lahore: The Lahore Police arrested 10,566 individuals for drug-related offenses and registered 10,251 cases against them in the last year, 2024.

A spokesman for Lahore Police said that substantial quantities of narcotics were seized during the year, including 7,805-kg hashish, 436-kg opium, 285-kg heroin, 176-kg ice and 77,190 litres of liquor. In addition, 5,065 suspects were detained for gambling-related activities, resulting in 1,212 cases being registered and the recovery of over Rs. 18.9 million in cash from the offenders.
