Faisalabad: The Kurr police have arrested a proclaimed offender (PO) involved in a double murder case after two months of the incident.
A police spokesman said here on Thursday that accused Ali Husnain had shot dead his rivals Khadim Hussain and Ashiq Hussain over a property dispute and escaped from the scene. He was declared as proclaimed offender.
The police succeeded in arresting the accused from Tehsil Tandlianwala. Further investigation was under progress, he added.
Rawalpindi: The mercy petitions of 19 convicted persons involved in May 9, 2023 riots have been accepted on humanitarian grounds.
'Sequel to the promulgation of punishments to 9th May Tragedy convicts, they have exercised their right to appeal and have asked for mercy/ remission in their punishments,' a news release issued by Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday.
'A total of 67 convicts have given their mercy petitions. 48 petitions have been processed to Courts of Appeal while, petitions of 19 convicts have been accepted purely on humanitarian grounds, in accordance with law. Mercy petitions of remaining will be decided in due course of time, following the legal process,' it further said.
Those whose punishment has been remitted are:

8.Muhammad Suleman s/o Said Ghani Jan
9.Hamza Sharif s/o Muhammad Azam
10.Muhammad Salman s/o Zahid Nisar
11.Asher Butt s/o Muhammad Arshad Butt
12.Muhammad Waqas s/o Malik Muhammad Khalil
13.Sufayan Idrees s/o Idrees Ahmed

They all shall be released after completion of procedural formalities.
All those convicted retain the right of appeal and other legal remedies as per the law and the constitution, it further said.
'The remission of punishments is a testament to the strength of the due process and fairness, which ensures that justice is served while also taking into account the principles of compassion and mercy,' the statement added.
Earlier in April 2024, release of 20 convicts was also carried out on humanitarian grounds in accordance with the law.

According to a report issued by the ICT administration here, in the last year, a total of 156 illegal petrol agencies were dismantled, leading to 110 arrests.
Additionally, 97 LPG outlets were seized and 95 accused were arrested for charging higher-than-notified rates.
Meanwhile, the district administration also sealed 13 petrol pumps during the year.
However, the district administration took prompted action against citizen complaints about irregularities and imposed fines of Rs 0.5 million on several petrol pumps this year.
Firthermore, in the anti-encroachment drive also saw strong action, with 56 arrests and 17 cases registered.
On the occasion, Deputy Commissiimer (DC) Islamabad, Irfan Nawaz Memon praised the authorities efforts and emphasized continued vigilance to address such violations.

Faisalabad: The police have arrested 40 people on charge of gambling from different parts of the area of D-Type Colony police station.
Police spokesman said here on Thursday that on special directive of City Police Officer (CPO) Kamran Adil a vigorous campaign was launched against gambling and the police conducted raids at various gambling dens and nabbed 40 people including Zain, Javaid, Babar, etc. in one-day red handed while gambling.
The police recovered bet money of Rs.179,500, mobile phones, LCDs, Laptops, Calculators, registers, receipt books, and other items from their possession while further investigation was under progress, he added.
