ANF seizes over 65 kg drugs in eight operations

Rawalpindi: Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) while conducting eight operations managed to recover 65.928 kg drugs worth Rs 10 million and arrested seven accused, said an ANF Headquarters spokesman here on Wednesday.

He informed that 1.4 kg hashish was recovered from a suspect rounded up near a bus stop in Islamabad.

30 intoxicated tablets were recovered from two suspects arrested near Bahria Town, Islamabad.

The arrested suspects confessed to selling drugs to the students of educational institutions.

112 grams ice was recovered from a parcel sent to Maldives through a courier office in Islamabad.

In an operation, 3.6 kg opium and 48 kg hashish were recovered near F/17 Society in Islamabad.

ANF conducted a raid in Gwadar Balochistan and seized 6 kg ice from a suspect.

2 kg heroin hidden in a vehicle was recovered on M-2 Islamabad and a suspect was arrested.

1.8 kg hashish hidden in a motorcycle near Iqbal Shaheed Toll Plaza Attock was seized in an operation and an accused was arrested.

3 kg ice was recovered from secret cavities of a vehicle near Baleli Quetta and an Afghan national was arrested during the operation.

Cases have been registered against the arrested accused under the Narcotics Control Act and further investigations are under process.

Pirwadhai Police recover stolen bus, arrest accused

Rawalpindi: The Pirwadhai Police on Wednesday recovered a bus worth millions of rupees stolen five days ago and arrested the accused.

The police traced the accused identified as Akhtar Hussain with the help of technical means and human intelligence.

He stole the vehicle with the help of a master key, a Rawalpindi Police spokesman said.

Two drug-traffickers held

Faisalabad: Police arrested two drug-peddlers and scores of others for jubilant firing and 'immoral' dances in a marriage party during the last 24 hours.

According to police sources here on Wednesday, a team of Peoples Colony police arrested drug-traffickers riding a motorbike on Satiana Road and seized over 11kg hashish from them.

The accused were identified as Sadaqat and Doulat Ali. A case has been registered against them.

Separately, Sahianwala police apprehended scores of people on the charge of aerial firing and 'immoral' dance in a marriage party at Chak No 18-JB.

A case has been registered against the accused.

PFUJ workers reaffirm commitment to press freedom

Sanghar: Central Vice President of PFUJ Workers, Nasir Shaikh, and senior leader Irfan Arain emphasized that the history of PFUJ Workers is filled with relentless struggles for press freedom. Speaking at the Tando Adam Press Club during a felicitation ceremony for the newly elected office bearers, they vowed to continue their fight for press freedom, journalists' rights, and freedom of expression without fear.

The newly elected office bearers, including President Sheeraz Samoon, Vice President Haji Khan Solangi, General Secretary Javed Mustafa, Joint Secretary Ashiq Hussain Sand, Office Secretary Rana Suleman, and others, were warmly congratulated. President Shieeraz Samoon welcomed the guests and presented traditional Ajrak gifts to them.

In their address, Nasir Shaikh and Irfan Arain, along with other PFUJ Workers leaders, highlighted the sacrifices made by journalists for public awareness and raising issues of marginalized communities.

They noted that several journalists lost their lives while exposing societal injustices. They also underscored the role of PFUJ Workers in uniting journalists and media workers across the country, enhancing their professional skills, and strengthening their capacity to advocate for freedom of the press.

The leaders stressed that press freedom and democracy are interlinked, urging PFUJ members to study the organization's history to understand the essence of their struggle. They also called for transparency in the allocation and auditing of funds for journalistic organizations, ensuring that genuine journalists benefit.

Later, the PFUJ Workers leaders visited the office of the Tando Adam Union of Journalists Workers, where they held an annual performance meeting. TUJ Workers President Mumtaz Tamimi, General Secretary Khalid Khaskheli, and senior journalists Riaz Hussain Sanjrani and others attended the event.

The ceremony reinforced PFUJ Workers' unwavering commitment to press freedom, democracy, and journalists' welfare, promising a continued fight for these causes.

IKD Hayatabad treats 149893 patients in 2024

Peshawar: The Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD), the sole facility in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa treated 149893 patients during the year 2024.

According to media cell of IKD, the institute has been providing specialized care for kidney-related ailments, free dialysis services, and renal transplants.

It said that during the last year 26,836 patients were attended at Emergency Service, 40,873 patients served at Nephrology Department, 82,184 patients by Urology Department and 7,149 patients were admitted.

Similarly 7,940 major and minor procedures were performed while laboratory services were provided to 433,698 patients.

57,357 patients availed services at Radiology department while free dialysis sessions of 27,369 were also conducted.

Furthermore IKD successfully performed 38 kidney transplant procedures during the period.

In recognition of its excellent performance, IKD achieved ISO certification and resumed renal transplants.

The hospital expanded its bed capacity from 102 to 309 to meet the increasing patient load.

It added that a donated CT scan machine from UNHCR was made operational in 2024 addressing the needs of 35-40 percent of urology patients daily.

Afghan nationals also received substantial care, with 6,836 treated in OPD, 397 in emergency, and 275 undergoing surgeries.

IKD maintained academic excellence by signing agreements with 14 institutions for training nurses and paramedics. A separate agreement was made with PKI/PAF Hospital Islamabad for renal transplant training.

Panhwar Institute of Sindh studies Jamshoro to establish seed bank

Hyderabad: In a groundbreaking move to preserve the agricultural heritage of Sindh, the M. H. Panhwar Institute of Sindh Studies Jamshoro has announced the establishment of a seed bank dedicated to the conservation of indigenous seeds of staple foods.

This decision was made during a meeting held at the institute, where the concept of establishing a seed bank was floated and discussed in detail. The initiative aimed to collect, conserve, and distribute traditional and indigenous crop varieties in Sindh, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

The meeting began with discussions on the critical need to preserve the genetic diversity of traditional crops of Sindh and concluded with a concrete action plan. The key resolutions passed during the meeting included:

The Establishment of the Seed Bank, a dedicated facility will be created at the institute to conserve indigenous seeds of staple crops.

Progressive farmers and landowners willing to volunteer land for cultivating indigenous crop varieties will be identified.

A comprehensive survey will be conducted to document indigenous seeds and their places of origin.

All collected seed varieties will be catalogued, and their DNA, nutritional value, and chemical composition will be analyzed in collaboration with relevant labs. All gathered data will be systematically recorded for future reference.

Several individuals and organizations pledged their support for this initiative, such as: Mir Amanullah Talpur volunteered to provide numerous indigenous seed varieties he has preserved and offered 10 acres of his farmland for conservation cultivation.

Muzamil Farooqi from Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam promised to contribute at least five varieties of indigenous crops. Ghulam Sarwar Panhwar also offered his farmland to support the conservation efforts.

The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Wazir Ali Baloch and attended by Chairman of Institute Sani Hussain Panhwar, former Vice-Chancellor SABS University Jamshoro Prof. Dr. Bhai Khan Shar, Librarian of Digital Library Niranjan Rajani, Mir Amanullah Talpur, Ghulam Sarwar Panhwar, Prof. Dr. Ali Murtaza Dharejo, Zafar Junejo, Muzamil Farooque Jamali, Librarian of Physical Library Liaquat Rizvi and Abdul Latif Laghari.

The meeting attendees visited the institute's physical and digital libraries, which house an impressive collection of 7,000 digitized books. The delegation also witnessed the number of books of M. H. Panhwar and books donated by Zafar Junejo and Ghulam Muhammad Lakho. The delegation expressed appreciation for the institute's commitment to preserving the region's cultural and agricultural legacy.
