Karachi: Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hasan Naqvi on Monday reviewed the ongoing campaign against illegal profiteering and roadside encroachments so as to make it more effective, while chairing a meeting of the deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners at his office here.
It was decided that during the crackdown on profiteers, the prices of flour, roti, naan, beef, and mutton will be specifically checked.
It was further decided that heavy fines will be imposed on shopkeepers found guilty of overcharging, and habitual offenders will be arrested and their shops sealed.
Simultaneously, all Assistant Commissioners and Magistrates will be out in the field to check prices and ensure that essential goods are sold at official rates under their supervision.
The Commissioner Karachi stated that officers must ensure that official rates for food items are strictly enforced and that the public can access these goods at the designated official rates.
All DCs presented a review of price control measures in their respective districts. Assistant Commissioner, Commissioner Headquarters, Iqrar Jatoi, presented a report of the previous week’s actions to the meeting.
The meeting was informed that between August 24 to 30, Assistant Commissioners checked prices at 2,409 locations.
As a result, fines totaling Rs 1.996 million (19 lakh 96 thousand rupees) were imposed on 376 profiteers, 17 shops were sealed, and four profiteers were arrested.
Additionally, 611 shopkeepers were issued warnings. According to the report, officers found the prices at over 1,100 shops to be satisfactory.
The meeting also reviewed the prices of eggs and expressed dissatisfaction over the current egg prices.
It was decided that representatives of the Egg Association will be summoned and warned to ensure that eggs are made available to citizens at reasonable prices.
