Karachi: The Sindh government has taken key decisions to modernize the province’s public transport system, including launching an EV taxi service in September, introducing 50 new double-decker buses in Karachi in October and inducting another 1, 000 electric (EV) buses into the public transport fleet in phases from the end of this year.
Moreover, new People’s Bus Service routes from Larkana to Qambar and Qambar to Shahdadkot will also be launched soon.
These decisions were taken during an important meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, CEO Trans Karachi Zubair Channa, Project Director Yellow Line Kamal Dayo, and other concerned officials. A detailed briefing was also presented on various ongoing projects.
The meeting also decided to open a section of the mixed traffic lane on Karachi University Road for public use in September to significantly improve traffic flow. On the occasion, Sharjeel Inam Memon directed that all depots of the Red Line BRT project be completed within the stipulated timeline, while the new People’s Bus Service routes from Larkana to Qambar and Qambar to Shahdadkot should also be made operational at the earliest.
Speaking at the meeting, Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the Sindh government’s EV taxi service will be launched in September, while another 1, 000 electric buses will be inducted into the public transport system in phases. He said that 50 new double-decker buses will arrive in Karachi in October, providing citizens with modern, comfortable, and high-quality travel facilities.
He added that opening a section of the mixed traffic lane on University Road to the public in September will significantly improve traffic flow. Sharjeel Inam Memon reiterated the commitment that the Sindh government will continue to take steps to provide modern, safe, eco-friendly, and reliable public transport facilities to the citizens.
