Sukkur: The Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has introduced Drug-l Coated Balloon (DCB) Angioplasty at its Cardiology Ward, bringing a tent free solution for patients with complex small vessel coronary disease.
The advanced treatment is designed specifically for small caliber coronary vessels where traditional stenting poses challenges. Unlike conventional angioplasty, the DCB technique uses a balloon that both opens the narrowed vessel and delivers anti proliferative medication directly to the vessel wall with no permanent stent implanted.
Dr Raheem Bux Bhatti, Founder and Director of GIMS, announced the launch, noting that the technology expands treatment options for patients who were previously poor candidates for stenting. “Our goal is to bring world class cardiac interventions to Gambat so patients in Sindh and all other provinces have access to the latest, safest treatments close to home, Dr Bhatti said.
Dr Ghulam Jaffar Shah, Consultant Cardiologist at GIMS, explained the clinical advantage for complex small vessel disease, leaving no metal behind reduces long-term complications. The balloon performs the mechanical dilation and drug delivery in one step, and we are seeing excellent clinical outcomes in suitable patients.
He said that the key benefits of DCB Angioplasty at GIMS including no permanent stent implanted, reduces risk of late stent, thrombosis and allows natural vessel healing, balloon opens the vessel plus delivers drug directly to prevent restenosis and excellent clinical outcomes for complex small vessel disease cases . He said that the stent free solution preserves future treatment options
The procedure is now available at the GIMS Gambat Cardiology Ward for patients referred by cardiologists. The institute expects the technology to significantly improve care for diabetic patients and others with diffuse disease in small coronary arteries.
