According to Abdul Ghafoor Malik, president of the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), the small and medium industries based in Sialkot generate an annual foreign exchange income of over US$2.5 billion, thereby strengthening the national economy.
The innovative business leaders of Sialkot strongly believe in inclusion and diversity, recognising that visionary business practices contribute to a thriving economy. Currently, more than 20,000 firms are registered with the SCCI.
Abdul Ghafoor Malik highlights that thousands of small and medium-sized industries operate in and around Sialkot, globally recognised for their quality products, unique export culture, and the production of value-added goods such as leather products, sports goods, surgical instruments, gloves, textile items, sportswear, martial arts uniforms, musical instruments, kitchenware, hollow ware, knives, cutlery items, and military uniform badges.
Furthermore, Sialkot-made footballs, field hockey sticks, cricket gear, and boxing gloves have been used in international games, including the Olympics and World Cups. It’s worth noting that the surgical and sports goods industries are among the oldest in the region, playing a vital role not only in strengthening the national economy but also in providing employment opportunities to hundreds of industrial workers.
Surgical instruments from Pakistan enjoy a global monopoly due to their competitive pricing and uncompromising quality. Companies worldwide are increasingly entering into joint ventures with Pakistani firms.
Malik points out that most developed countries import surgical instruments from Sialkot, and every day, hundreds of surgeries worldwide rely on instruments manufactured in Sialkot, silently but significantly contributing to global healthcare.
In the current landscape, there’s an urgent need for a distinct business strategy tailored to Sialkot’s unique export culture and craftsmanship. This strategy can help maximize foreign exchange earnings for the country.
Local exporters in Sialkot not only excel in foreign trade but also prioritise fulfilling their social responsibilities. The corporate sector actively engages in self-help initiatives, which have become an integral part of Sialkot’s culture.
The Sialkot exporters have achieved remarkable feats in self-help projects, including the establishment of Sialkot International Airport Limited (SIAL), Sialkot Dry Port, and their private airline, AirSial Airline.
For their outstanding contributions, the Sialkot chamber has received the Development Leadership Award from the Government of Pakistan, an honour reserved for institutions and organisations dedicated to the country’s development.
Additionally, Sialkot’s leather and textile products have gained recognition in the global market, competing favourably in terms of both quality and price. Hand-embroidered badges and uniform accessories also hold a strong reputation internationally.
The local business community voluntarily plays a pivotal role in boosting exports, fulfilling social responsibilities, and uplifting the city.
Despite facing numerous challenges, local exporters and manufacturers remain committed to their international commitments, ensuring the seamless functioning of the national economic machinery and competing effectively in the global market.
