Lahore: Punjab Irrigation Minister Kazim Ali Pirzada has said that groundwater will be recharged using floodwater at Head Islam. He said this while addressing the inauguration ceremony of Groundwater Recharge Project at Head Islam on the Mailsi canal, said a handout issued here on Monday.
He said that during the recent floods 12,000 hectares feet of water was stored underground. The minister said that under this project, flood water from Head Islam would be diverted into old Mailsi Canal. By storing the 2025, floodwater underground, the water level had increased more than 5 feet, he added.
Kazim Ali Pirzada said that groundwater recharge had improved the performance of tube wells and availability of drinking water. Research Wing Director Dr Zakir Sial briefed the minister about the project. Senior officers of the Irrigation department and others attended the ceremony.
