Multan: Punjab Food Authority (PFA) launched a major crackdown on manufacturers of hazardous pickles and preserves and destroyed 2, 000 kilograms of fungus- and insect-infested pickles and preserves during an inspection of a production unit in Madina colony, Marzi Pura, Burewala.
The action was carried out on the directions of PFA Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmed, as a food safety team inspected the production facility and found serious violations of food safety and hygiene standards.
According to the PFA, foul-smelling and fungus-contaminated pickles had been stored in chemical drums, while the production area was found in an extremely unhygienic condition with insects present. The team also discovered that the contaminated pickles were being packed in containers for supply to various grocery stores and supermarkets. The PFA team destroyed the hazardous pickles and preserves on the spot and imposed Rs100, 000 fine on the food business operators.
PFA Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmed said food safety teams were actively working against elements involved in endangering public health. He reiterated that preventing the production and sale of substandard and unsafe food was top priority.
